BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1958, Carpets - Defemination of mass of total pile yarn per unir area, was
drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held the British Standards
Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1958, which was circulated
to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in April 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an
editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

CARPETS
DETERMINATION OF MASS OF TOTAL PILE YARN
PER UNIT AREA
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation describes a method for the determination of the mass of total pile yarn per unit area
and is applicable to all pile carpets with an untreated back.
2. PRINCiPLE
A known area of the carpet is weighed and dissected completely. The pile yarn is separated from the other
components and each is weighed separately.
3. APPARATUS
3.1 Balance, accurate to 1 mg.
3.2 Dissecting needles and forceps.
3.3 Rule, graduated in millimetres.
3.4 Scissors or sharp pointed knife.
4. ATMOSPHERE FOR CONDITIONING AND TESTING
The atmosphere for conditioning and testing should be one of the standard atmospheres for testing specified in
IS0 Recommendation R 139, Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing textiles.
5. TEST SPECIMENS
5.1 Cut out, using scissors or a sharp pointed knife, three squares each approximately 150 mm X 150 mm,
selecting them according to the standard procedure described in IS0 Recommendation R 1957, Machine-

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1958, Tapis-moquettes - Détemination de la masse totale du fil de velours
par unité de surface, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 38, Textiles, dont le Secrétariat est assuré
par la British Standards Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1958,
qui fut soumis, en avril 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de

quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

PAR UNITÉ DE SURFACE
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une méthode de détermination de la masse totale du fil de velours par
unité de surface, applicable à tous les tapis-moquettes à envers non enduit.
2. PRINCIPE
Pesée, puis dissection complète d’une portion de tapis de surface connue : le fil du velours est séparé des autres
composants puis chaque partie est pesée séparément.
3. APPAREILLAGE
3.1 Balance, précise à 1 mg.
3.2 Aiguilles et pinces à dissection.
3.3 Règle, graduée en millimètres.
3.4 Ciseaux ou lame tranchante aiguisée.
4. ATMOSPHÈRE DE CONDITIONNEMENT ET D’ESSAI
L‘atmosphère de conditionnement et d’essai doit être l’une des atmosphères normales d’essai spécifiée dans la
Recommandation ISO/R 139, Atmosphères normales pour le conditionnement et Sessai des textiles.

5.1 Prélever, à l’aide de ciseaux ou d‘une lame tranchante, trois éprouvettes de 150 mm X 150 mm sélectionnées
