BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 2143, Surface treatment of metals - Anodisation of aluminium and its alloys -
Estimation of the loss of absorptive power by colorant drop test with prior acid treatment, was drawn up by Tech-
nical Committee ISO/TC 79, Light metals and their alloys, the Secretariat of which is held by the Association
Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 2143, which was circulated to

all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in October 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an
editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation defines a method for checking the sealing of oxide coatings obtained by anodisation
(anodic oxidation) of aluminium and its alloys, by estimation of the loss of absorptive power by colorant drop
test with prior acid treatment.
2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
This method is applicable to coatings of oxide intended for applications where they are exposed to the weather,
or for protective purposes in corrosive media and where resistance to staining is important.
It is not applicable to coatings formed on alloys containing more than 2 % copper.
In the case of coatings coloured in deep shades, where an estimation of the intensity of the residual stain is diff-
cult or impossible, only the prior acid treatment is used, and a check made as to whether or not the tint has

La Recommandation ISO/R 2143, Traitements de surface des métaux - Anodisation de l’aluminium et de ses
alliages - Appréciation de la perte du pouvoir absorbant par essai à la goutte de colorant avec action acide préalable,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique iSO/TC 79, Métaux légers et leurs alliages, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par
l’association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 2143 qui

fut soumis, en octobre 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. 11 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quel-
ques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 définit une méthode de contrôle du colmatage des couches d’oxyde obtenues
par anodisation (oxydation anodique) de l’aluminium et de ses alliages, par appréciation de la perte du pouvoir
absorbant par essai à la goutte de colorant avec action acide préalable.
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
Cette méthode s’applique aux couches d’oxyde destinées à des applications soumises aux intempéries ou à des fins
de protection dans des milieux agressifs, et dans tous les cas où la résistance aux taches est importante.
Elle ne s’applique pas aux couches édifiées sur des alliages contenant plus de 2 % de cuivre.
