BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 11 48, Plastics - Aqueous dispersions of polymers and copolymers - Determination
of pH, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, the Secretariat of which is held by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In May 1968, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 1626) was circulated to all the IS0 Member Bodies for
enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

1. SCOPE

This IS0 Recommendation describes a roc dure fc the determination of pH by a pH-m ter equipped with
giass electrode.
The procedure is suitable for aqueous polymer and copolymer dispersions.
2. PRINCIPLE
Measurement of the difference of potential existing between a glass electrode and a reference calomel electrode
immersed in the aqueous dispersion, and reading of this difference, expressed in pH units, directly on the appa-
ratus scale.

Détermination du pH, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 61, Matières plastiques, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par 1’American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En mai 1968, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 1626) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous les Comités
Membres de I’ISO. 11 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités
Membres suivants :

1. OBJET ET DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une métho,: de I $termination du pH avec un pH-mètre à électrode
de verre.
Cette méthode est applicable aux dispersions aqueuses de polymères et de copolymères.
2. PRINCIPE
Mesurage de la différence de potentiel existant entre une électrode de verre et une électrode de référence au
calomel plongeant dans la dispersion aqueuse et lecture de cette différence de potentiel, exprimée en unités pH,
directement sur l’échelle de l’appareil.
Pour les dispersions ayant une viscosité supérieure à 200 P environ, le mesurage du pH peut être effectué après
dilution avec un égal volume
