BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1 185, Electrical connections between prime movers and towed vehicles with
24 V electrical equipment for commercial international traffic, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22,
Automobiles, the Secretariat of which is held by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question led to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.

In October 1968, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 1723) was circulated to all the IS0 Member Bodies
for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies .

BETWEEN PRIME MOVERS AND TOWED VEHICLES
WITH 24 V ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
FOR COMMERCIAL INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation establishes the specifications which will permit, by means of a connector

socket and a plug, interchangeability of electrical connections between prime movers and towed vehicles,
that is to say between the towing vehicle and trailer or semi-trader (see Fig. 1).
2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
These specifications apply to vehicles in commercial and international traffic, fitted with electrical equipment
operating at a nominal voltage of 24 V.
3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Number of necessary contacts
The essential signalling lights which warrant road security require six contacts, the functions of which are
as follows
(1) Common return.
Left-hand tail and marker lamps, and number plate lamp.
(2)
(3) Left-hand direction indicator.
(4) Stop lamps.
(5) Right-hand direction indicator.
Right-hand tail and marker lamps, and number plate lamp.

La Recommandation ISO/R 1 185, Liaisons électriques entre véhicules tracteurs et véhicules remorqués avec
appareillage electrique 24 V, pour transports commerciaux internationaux, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique
ISO/TC 22, Automobile, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à ce sujet aboutirent à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En octobre 1968, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 1723) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous les Comités
Membres de IWO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités
Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 fixe des spécifications susceptibles de permettre, au moyen d’une prise
comportant un socle et une fiche, l’interchangeabilité des liaisons électriques entre véhicules tracteurs et
véhicules remorqués, qu’il s’agisse de camions et remorques, ou de tracteurs et semi-remorques (voir Fig. 1).
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
Ces spécifications s’appliquent à des véhicules pour transports commerciaux internationaux, munis d’appareillages
électriques fonctionnant sous une tension nominale de 24 V.
3. CARACTÉRISTIQUES GÉNÉRALES
3.1 Nombre de contacts nécessaires
Les feux de signalisation essentiels, qui assurent la sécurité routière, nécessitent 6 contacts, dont les fonctions
sont indiquées ci-après :
1) Masse.
Feu rouge arrière et d’encombrement gauche et feu de plaque d’immatriculation.
