Tobacco heating systems - Vocabulary

This document: - defines standardized terminology and definitions for the heated tobacco product (HTP) category; - defines the heated tobacco product (HTP) sub-categories and the attributes of each; - does not include waterpipe or loose-leaf tobacco products. This document does not specify the means for aerosol trapping, subsequent sample preparation or analyses of components in the trapped aerosol. The HTP category clearly excludes products such as conventional combustible cigarettes, cigars, roll-your own tobacco products, pipe tobacco products, e‑vapor products (also called electronic cigarettes or e‑cigarettes), moist smokeless tobacco, oral tobacco products, and oral tobacco derived nicotine (OTDN) products. This document describes the terms and definitions that apply to tobacco heating systems. Any product that falls under those terms and definitions can be tested applying testing standards that are specifically addressing tobacco heating systems. This document aids in choosing the right standard for tobacco heating systems testing.

Introduction
This document provides standardized terminology for the heated tobacco product (HTP) category and sub-
categories as well as the product attributes for each sub-category to aide with the categorization of HTPs.
With the emerging development and commercialization of HTPs in the worldwide marketplace, there is an
urgent need for standardization of terminology and definitions to define the types of products that fit within
this category. The purpose of standardized terminology is to provide consensus on definitions that describe
the HTP category and sub-categories for the purpose of consistency across the scientific community. This
standardization ensures that scientific study results apply to the appropriate product types and can be
compared across multiple studies.
The purpose of this document is to provide a categorization of the different available designs. These
definitions are important to clearly distinguish HTPs from other tobacco products.
NOTE This document is a reference document for ISO standards on tobacco heating systems (e.g. ISO 5501).
Regulation and standardisation are independent from each other, and standardisation does not pre-empt regulation.

Introduction
Le présent document fournit une terminologie standardisée pour la catégorie et les sous-catégories des
produits de tabac chauffés (PTC) ainsi que les attributs de produits pour chaque sous-catégorie afin de
faciliter la classification des PTC.
Avec le développement naissant et la commercialisation des PTC sur le marché mondial, il est urgent de
standardiser la terminologie et les définitions afin de déterminer les types de produit qui appartiennent à
cette catégorie. Une terminologie standardisée vise à fournir un consensus sur les définitions qui décrivent
la catégorie et les sous-catégories des PTC dans un souci de cohérence au sein de la communauté scientifique.
Cette standardisation garantit que les résultats d’études scientifiques s’appliquent aux types de produit
