Overview - ISO 15081:2011 (Graphical symbols for pressurized irrigation systems)
ISO 15081:2011 specifies standardized graphical symbols for use on drawings and diagrams related to the installation of pressurized agricultural irrigation systems. Intended as a collective application of the ISO 14617 series, this second edition (2011) updates the first edition (2005) and is designed to ensure clear, consistent representation of irrigation components across technical documentation.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard defines symbol sets and basic design rules rather than performance or manufacturing requirements. Major technical topics include:
- General rules: group (generic) symbols that can be completed for specific components; guidance to follow ISO 81714-1 for symbol design.
- Piping and piping accessories: main/secondary pipelines, pipe connections, direction of flow, pipe changes and sleeves, flexible hoses, reclaimed and domestic water identification.
- Connections and joints: detachable/non‑detachable junctions, flanges, unions, quick‑release couplings, expansion joints, plugs and end-caps.
- Valves (three classifications):
- According to structure (gate, globe, butterfly, ball, diaphragm, three-/four‑way, etc.)
- According to operation (manual, hydraulic/pneumatic actuators, electric motor, solenoid, float, spring, cylinder)
- According to function (non‑return/check, air‑release, volumetric, control and safety valves, foot valves)
- Pumps: basic pump symbols and variants (submerged, vertical/horizontal, pumping station).
- Measuring devices: pressure gauges, water meters (diaphragm, rotameter, turbine, electromagnetic) and recorders.
- Water‑application equipment: sprinklers (full/part‑circle), pop‑ups, sprayers, drippers and emitting pipes.
- Filters and chemical injectors: strainers, media/sand filters; injection tanks and pumps (hydraulic/electrical).
- Irrigation machines and controllers: reel, traveller, centre‑pivot, moving lateral, side‑roll machines, and controllers.
Applications - who uses ISO 15081:2011
This standard is valuable for:
- Irrigation system designers and civil/agricultural engineers producing plan and schematic drawings
- Technical illustrators, CAD librarians and drafters building symbol libraries
- Equipment manufacturers and suppliers creating documentation, manuals and datasheets
- Contractors and installers interpreting technical diagrams on site
- Procurement, certification bodies and trainers seeking consistent documentation and interoperability
Practical uses include creating installation drawings, O&M manuals, CAD symbol libraries, tender documents, and training materials that reduce misinterpretation and improve communication among stakeholders.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 15081 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 23, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and
forestry, Subcommittee SC 18, Irrigation and drainage equipment and systems.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 15081:2005), which has been technically revised.

Agricultural equipment — Graphical symbols for pressurized
irrigation systems
1 Scope
This International Standard establishes graphical symbols for use on drawings and diagrams relating to the
installation of pressurized agricultural irrigation systems. It is a collective application standard of the ISO 14617
series of International Standards.

rules
3 General rules
A group of devices/components is represented by a general symbol. This general symbol shall be completed
for any special component of the group.
In this International Standard, various assemblies of actuators with valves are shown only on the valve general
symbol (see 6.1.1), but they may operate various types of valves.
For a more detailed representation, these basic symbols may be combined with designations specified in a
description, or else a system of more detailed symbols based on these basic symbols may be devised.
The graphical symbols in this International Standard have been designed according to the basic rules given
in ISO 81714-1. When new symbols are designed, e.g. a combination of symbols as in the present document,
those basic rules shall be followed.
This International Standard presents graphical symbols intended primarily for irrigation equipment. Additional

graphical symbols for diagrams can be found in ISO 14617 .
