Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Each member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the IS0 Council. They are approved in accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard IS0 1803/l was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 59,
Building construction.
IS0 1803 was first published in 1973. This second edition consists of IS0 1803/l and
IS0 1803/Z, which together cancel and replace the first edition, of which they are a
technical revision.

Part 1 : General terms
0 Introduction 3 Terms and definitions (see also the annex)
The terms and definitions given in this International Standard
3.1 Terms concerning dimensions
reflect continuing developments in the understanding of the
problems posed by the presence of unavoidable variations in
3.1.1 dimension (physical quantity)l) : Extent of a body or of
the dimensional characteristics of components and structures.

depth, diameter) or along a given line (for example, cir-

stitute a basic vocabulary relating to the calculation of sizes, to
specification and to control to achieve conformity with
specifications.
3.1.2 size (numerical value) : Magnitude of a dimension in
terms of a defined unit.
Definitions of derived terms are given in IS0 1803/2.
3.1.3 reference size2) : Size specified in the design to which
deviations are related.
1 Scope and field of application
3.1.4 target size : Reference size from which deviations
would ideally be zero.
This part of IS0 1803 defines general terms needed for the
study, specification and use of dimensional tolerances for
building.
3.1.5 actual size : Size obtained by measurement (after cor-
rection of known measurement errors).
NOTE - Terms printed in italics in the definitions are themselves de-
fined in this part of IS0 1803.
3.1.6 limits of size, upper and lower : Maximum and
minimum sizes at or between which the actual size shall lie.
2 Reference physical conditions
3.1.7 tolerance (physical quantityI3) : Permitted variation of
size.
In principle, a statement of reference physical c
