BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 2106, Surface treatment of metals - Anodisation (anodic oxidation) of
aluminium and its alloys - Measurement of the mass of the oxide coatings - Gravimetric method, was drawn up
by Technical Committee ISO/TC 79, Light metals and their alloys, the Secretariat of which is held by the
Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 21 06, which was circulated
to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in October 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an
editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation describes a gravimetric method of measuring the mass of the oxide coatings obtained
by anodisation (anodic oxidation) of aluminium and its alloys.
2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
This method is applicable to all oxide coatings formed by anodising aluminium and its alloys, either cast or
wrought. This method is suitable for most aluminium alloys except those in which the copper content is greater
than 6 %.
If the thickness is known with sufficient precision*, measurement of the mass of the coating enables its apparent
density to be determined.
Inversely, if the conditions of application of the coating, or its density, are known, the determination of the mass
can provide an approximate measurement of the thickness.
3. PRINCIPLE
Dissolution of the anodised coatings on the aluminium without significantly attacking the basis metal, using a
mixture of phosphoric acid and chromium trioxide, the concentration of which is shown below.
Determination of the mass of the oxide coating by weighing the sample, before and after dissolution. This mass is

par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 79. Métaux légers et leurs alliages, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par l’Association
Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 ND 21 06, qui
fut soumis, en octobre 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. il fut approuvé, sous réserve de
quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une méthode gravimétrique de mesurage de la masse des couches d’oxyde
obtenues par anodisation (oxydation anodique) de l’aluminium et de ses alliages.
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
Cette méthode s’applique à toutes les couches d’oxyde obtenues sur l’aluminium et ses alliages, par anodisation.
aussi bien sur pièces moulées que sur produits corroyés. Cette méthode est valable pour la plupart des alliages
d’aluminium, a l’exception de ceux dont la teneur en cuivre est supérieure à 6 %.
Si l’épaisseur est connue avec une précision suffisante*, le mesurage de la masse de la couche permet de déterminer
sa masse volumique apparente.
Inversement, si les conditions de réalisation de la couche, ou sa masse volumique, sont connues, la détermination
de la masse peut permettre un mesurage approximatif de l’épaisseur.
3. PNNCIPE
Dissolution des couches anodisées sur l’aluminium, sans attaque sensible du métal de base, au moyen d’un mélange
