BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Reconimendatjon R 242, Carbide Tips for Turtling Tools - Metric Series, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Sniall Tools, the Secretariat of which is held by the Associa-
tion Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question by theTechnical Committee began in 1952 and led, in 1958, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In September 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 308) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature,
by the following Member Bodies :

Burma Italy Switzerland
Czechoslovakia Mexico United Kingdom
France Netherlands U. S. A.
Germany Pakistan
Greece Poland
One Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft: U. S. S. R.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council,
which decided, in December 1961, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

INTRODUCTION
I. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation relates to carbide tips for turning tools.
It is valid for applications in metric measure only.*
II. INTER CHANGEABILITY
The dimensions specified in the present IS0 Recommendation are unified dimensions intended
not merely to permit interchangeability between the tips and the tool shanks on which they have
to be mounted, but also to facilitate trade between the various countries using metric measure.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 242, Plaquettes en carbures métalliques pour outils de tour - Série
métrique, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 29, Petit outillage, dont le Secrétariat est
assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1952 et
aboutirent en 1958 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En septembre 1959, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 308) fut soumis à l’enquête de
tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre
rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

Un Comité Membre se déclara opposé à l’approbation du Projet: U. R. S. S.
Le Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil de 1’ISO
qui décida, en décembre 1961, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.
