Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of

Introduction
This International Standard gives a list of the botanical names of plants used for the production of essential oils, in
order to harmonize their nomenclature.
In addition to this International Standard, ISO/TC 54, Essential oils, is preparing a Technical Report

(ISO/TR 21092 ) where different numbers (CAS-USA, EINECS, CAS-EINECS, Fema, EC and FDA numbers) for
the characterization of essential oils will be included.
Characterization of essential oils by using a single number (for instance, the CAS number) would not be complete
and could lead to ambiguity and misunderstandings.
That is the reason why, through the above-mentioned Technical Report, ISO/TC 54 intends to provide the users of
essential oils with useful information for a complete characterization of the essential oils included in this
International Standard.

La présente Norme internationale donne une liste des noms botaniques des plantes utilisées pour la fabrication
des huiles essentielles dans le but d'harmoniser leur nomenclature.
En complément à la présente Norme internationale, l'ISO/TC 54, Huiles essentielles, prépare un Rapport technique

(ISO/TR 21092 ) dans lequel seront inclus différents numéros (CAS-USA, EINECS, CAS-EINECS, Fema, EC et
FDA) de caractérisation des huiles essentielles.
La caractérisation des huiles essentielles par un seul numéro (par exemple le numéro CAS) ne serait pas complète
et pourrait engendrer des ambiguïtés et des erreurs.
C'est la raison pour laquelle, par le biais du Rapport technique mentionné ci-dessus, l'ISO/TC 54 fournira aux
utilisateurs une caractérisation complète des huiles essentielles incluses dans la présente Norme internationale.
