Overview

EN 50193-2-2:2016 (CLC) specifies energy-efficiency test methods for open-outlet, single point of use electric instantaneous water heaters intended for showering (instantaneous showers) without downstream mixing. It is a focused part of the EN 50193 series and applies to household or similar use. This standard does not cover heaters addressed by other parts of the series and only defines tests for assessing energy efficiency - not safety, installation or performance beyond efficiency.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Open outlet, single point-of-use electric instantaneous showers; testing only for energy efficiency.
  • Test conditions:
    • Tests performed at the appliance rated power (reference 230 V / 400 V as applicable).
    • Pressure, temperature, flow and power must be maintained within the tolerances given in the standard (deviations invalidate the test).
    • The shower hose/outlet fittings are not connected during testing.
  • Load pattern:
    • Only the XS load pattern from Annex A (Table A.1) is used.
    • Time between draw-offs may be reduced to accelerate testing, provided results are unaffected.
    • Appliances shall be set to achieve the minimum flow (f) specified in Annex A; if continuous operation at that flow is impossible, a higher flow may be used but must be recorded.
  • Measurement setup:
    • Test set-up details are defined in Annex B (flow meter, inlet/outlet sensors, power meter, pressure control, open outlet, etc.).
  • Efficiency metrics:
    • Static efficiency methods from Part 1 apply except where modified.
    • Start-up losses (istartQ) are measured as the Wh consumed from element energisation until outlet water reaches the useable temperature Tm; recorded by a Wh meter.
    • Loss adjustment for semiconductor power switches is not applicable for these open-outlet electronic instantaneous units.
  • Controls & smart features:
    • Smart control compliance is not applicable; daily energy demand is set with smart=0.

Practical applications and users

This standard is used by:

  • Manufacturers developing and validating electric instantaneous shower products for efficiency claims.
  • Test laboratories performing standardized efficiency testing and issuing test reports.
  • Certification bodies / conformity assessors verifying compliance with EU energy labelling and ecodesign when the standard is referenced.
  • Product designers, specifiers and procurement teams needing reliable efficiency data for selection and documentation.
  • Regulatory affairs teams aligning products with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 812/2013 (energy labelling) and Commission Regulation (EU) No 814/2013 (ecodesign), where compliance with normative clauses can confer a presumption of conformity.

Related standards (if applicable)

  • Part 1 of EN 50193 series (general provisions and test clauses referenced).
  • EN 50193 other parts - this document does not apply to heaters covered under those parts.
  • Links to EU regulations: energy labelling (812/2013) and ecodesign (814/2013) are covered in informative annexes ZZA and ZZB of this standard.
