Overview
EN 50193-1:2016/A1:2020 - Electric instantaneous water heaters - Methods for measuring the performance - Part 1: General requirements (CLC/CENELEC) defines the general terms, definitions and measurement methods for assessing the energy performance of electric instantaneous (tankless) water heaters used for domestic hot water and similar applications. This Amendment A1 (2020) updates EN 50193-1:2016 and links the standard to EU energy labelling and ecodesign requirements where cited in the Official Journal.
Note: EN 50193-1:2016/A1:2020 addresses performance measurement and energy efficiency; it does not cover appliance safety requirements.
Key topics
- Scope & applicability: Electric instantaneous water heaters that meet at least one load pattern from Annex A and heat water below boiling temperature.
- Terms & definitions: Standardizes vocabulary for consistent testing and reporting.
- Measurement methods: Procedures to determine daily, weekly and annual electricity consumption and water heater efficiency.
- Load profiles (Annex A): Defined tapping patterns for reproducible testing of different usage scenarios.
- Test rig & setup (Annex B): Guidance for test-rig configuration to simulate water demand and measure standby and active consumption.
- Smart control: Determination of the smart-control factor (SCF) and methods to evaluate energy use with smart settings enabled or disabled.
- Energy efficiency metrics: Methods to calculate daily energy demand, annual electricity consumption and water heater efficiency indicators.
- Regulatory linkage: Mappings to Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 812/2013 (energy labelling) and Commission Regulation (EU) No 814/2013 (ecodesign) are provided (Annexes ZZA and ZZB) - when the standard is cited in the Official Journal, complying clauses give a presumption of conformity with relevant requirements.
Applications / Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers: to design, test and document product performance and to support energy labelling and ecodesign claims.
- Test laboratories: to perform standardized, repeatable performance measurements for certification and comparison.
- Certification bodies & regulators: to evaluate compliance with EU energy labelling and ecodesign frameworks.
- Product designers & energy consultants: to benchmark efficiency, optimize control strategies (including smart controls), and select appropriate load profiles for intended use-cases.
- Procurement and building specifiers: to compare model energy consumption for selection and lifecycle cost assessments.
