SIST EN 60317-22:2005
(Main)Specifications for particular types of winding wires -- Part 22 : Polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire overcoated with polyamide, class 180
Specifications for particular types of winding wires -- Part 22 : Polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper wire overcoated with polyamide, class 180
Specifies the requirements of enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide resin. Class 180 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200°C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows: - grade 1: 0,050 mm up to and including 3,150 mm; - grade 2: 0,050 mm up to and including 5,000 mm; - grade 3: 0,250 mm up to and including 1,600 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of EN 60317-0-1. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below: - new requirements for appearance, Subclause 3.2, added; - breakdown voltage values, former Table 3, replaced with a reference to EN 60317-0-1; - new pin hole test, Clause 23, added.

- stopnja 1: od 0,050 mm do vključno 3,150 mm;
- stopnja 2: od 0,050 mm do vključno 5,000 mm;
- stopnja 3: 0,250 mm do vključno 1,600 mm.
Nominalne premere prevodnikov določa klavzula 4 IEC 60317-0-1.

Overview
EN 60317-22:2004 (CLC) specifies requirements for polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round copper winding wire overcoated with polyamide, class 180. It is part of the IEC 60317 series for winding wires and applies to dual‑coated enamelled copper magnet wire intended for electrical windings where a thermal class 180 insulation system is required. The standard defines materials, dimensions, electrical and mechanical performance and test requirements for reliable use in motors, transformers, inductors and other electrical equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Insulation system: underlying enamel based on polyester or polyesterimide (modifiable while retaining chemical identity) with a polyamide overcoat.
- Thermal class: Class 180 - minimum temperature index 180 and heat‑shock temperature ≥ 200 °C. The standard notes the temperature index is not necessarily the recommended continuous operating temperature.
- Conductor diameters / grades: three grades covered:
- Grade 1: 0.050 mm to 3.150 mm
- Grade 2: 0.050 mm to 5.000 mm
- Grade 3: 0.250 mm to 1.600 mm
(Nominal diameters follow EN/IEC 60317-0-1.)
- Mechanical & electrical tests: references to EN/IEC 60317-0-1 for many core tests (dimensions, resistance, elongation, flexibility, continuity of insulation). EN 60317-22 adds or specifies:
- Heat shock: minimum 200 °C requirement (Clause 9).
- Cut‑through: no failure within 2 minutes at 265 °C.
- Resistance to abrasion: minimum force to failure values given (Table 1) for nominal diameters 0.250–2.500 mm.
- Breakdown voltage: referenced to EN/IEC 60317-0-1 with elevated temperature set at 180 °C.
- New pin hole test (Clause 23) and appearance requirements (Subclause 3.2) added in this edition.
- Other properties tested: solvents, refrigerants, solderability, heat/solvent bonding, dielectric dissipation, transformer oil resistance, loss of mass, packaging.
Applications and who uses this standard
EN 60317-22 is used by:
- Magnet wire manufacturers (material specification, QA).
- Motor, transformer and inductor designers specifying wire insulation for high‑temperature classes.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors performing acceptance and type tests.
- Procurement and compliance teams ensuring components meet Class 180 performance and regulatory requirements.
Typical applications include high‑temperature or high‑reliability windings in electric motors, power transformers, industrial actuators and other electro‑mechanical equipment requiring robust enamelled copper wire with a polyamide overcoat.
