Abstract

Specifies the requirements of enamelled round aluminium winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. Class 180 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows: - grade 1: 0,400 mm up to and including 1,600 mm; - grade 2: 0,400 mm up to and including 5,000 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of EN 60317-0-3. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below: - new requirements for appearance, Subclause 3.2, added; - springiness test, Clause 7, determined to be inappropriate; - cut-through test, Clause 10, determined to be inappropriate; - high temperature failure test, Clause 22, deleted; - new pin hole test, Clause 23, added.

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 is a Slovene standard from SIST, adopted from EN 60317-15:2004, for polyesterimide enamelled round aluminium winding wire, class 180. It specifies the material, size and performance requirements for wire used in windings in electrical equipment, so manufacturers, test labs, quality teams and buyers can check whether a wire type matches this class.

What does SIST EN 60317-15:2005 specify?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 specifies enamelled round aluminium winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin. The coating may be modified, but it must keep the chemical identity of the original resin and still meet all wire requirements.

The standard covers nominal conductor diameters for two grades:

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ZANormative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications

Class 180 means a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. The temperature index is a material rating, not a direct instruction for operating temperature, so the actual application limit still depends on the equipment and its use.

The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, definitions and test notes, dimensions, electrical and mechanical properties, thermal performance, chemical resistance, solderability, bonding, dielectric dissipation factor, loss of mass, pin hole testing and packaging. It is intended to be read with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60317-0-3.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60317-15:2005?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 relies on IEC 60317-0-3 for the general requirements and test methods, and it says that where there is a conflict, this part prevails. In practice, that means users apply the base rules from the general aluminium-wire part, then apply the specific class 180 requirements here.

Size, appearance and basic properties

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 covers appearance, dimensions, electrical resistance and elongation through references to IEC 60317-0-3, with the specific appearance requirements in Clause 3.2. For users, this is the first filter for acceptance: the wire has to look right, measure right and behave like the specified conductor before deeper testing is worthwhile.

Thermal performance

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 sets the heat shock temperature at 200 °C in Clause 9 and requires a minimum temperature index of 180 in Clause 15. It also uses an elevated temperature of 180 °C for the breakdown voltage test in Clause 13. In practice, these points show how the insulation is checked for heat endurance, both as a material rating and under test conditions.

Mechanical integrity

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 keeps flexibility and adherence in Clause 8 and resistance to abrasion in Clause 11. Table 1 gives the required abrasion force levels by nominal conductor diameter and by grade, and for intermediate diameters the next larger value is used. That matters because the wire must survive handling and winding without losing insulation performance.

Electrical and environmental resistance

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 includes tests for resistance to solvents, continuity of insulation, resistance to refrigerants, solderability, heat or solvent bonding, dielectric dissipation factor, resistance to transformer oil and loss of mass. These tests show whether the insulation still performs after exposure to the materials and processes common in electrical equipment manufacture and service.

Final verification and handling

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 adds a pin hole test in Clause 23 and packaging requirements in Clause 30. For a buyer or quality manager, these are the checks that support incoming inspection, reel acceptance and storage control after the wire is made.

What terms does SIST EN 60317-15:2005 define?

  • Class 180 - A thermal class for winding wire that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C.
  • Temperature index - A material rating used to express thermal endurance, not a direct recommendation for operating temperature.
  • Heat shock temperature - The temperature used to judge whether the insulated wire withstands sudden thermal stress.
  • Polyesterimide resin - The resin family used for the sole enamel coating on this wire.
  • Modified resin - A resin that has been chemically changed or supplemented with additives, while keeping the original resin identity and meeting all wire requirements.
  • Nominal conductor diameter - The stated conductor size used to select the applicable requirements and tests.
  • Grade 1 / Grade 2 - The two conductor-size ranges covered by the standard, with Grade 2 extending to larger diameters.

Who uses SIST EN 60317-15:2005?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 is used by winding wire manufacturers, electrical equipment makers, test laboratories and purchasing teams. It is relevant for motors, transformers and other equipment that use enamelled round aluminium wire in windings, because it gives a common basis for specification, testing and acceptance.

What changed in SIST EN 60317-15:2005 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 supersedes EN 60317-15:1994 + A1:1998. The stated changes are:

  • new appearance requirements were added in Subclause 3.2
  • the springiness test in Clause 7 was judged inappropriate
  • the cut-through test in Clause 10 was judged inappropriate
  • the high temperature failure test in Clause 22 was deleted
  • a new pin hole test was added in Clause 23

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60317-15:2005?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 is read with IEC 60317-0-3, which provides the general requirements for enamelled round aluminium wire, including definitions, dimensions and several shared test methods. Annex ZA maps that IEC reference to the corresponding European publication for use in the CENELEC system.

What does the SIST EN 60317-15:2005 document contain?

SIST EN 60317-15:2005 contains clause-by-clause requirements for appearance, dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, heat shock, abrasion, solvent resistance, breakdown voltage, insulation continuity, temperature index, refrigerant resistance, solderability, bonding, dielectric dissipation factor, transformer oil resistance, loss of mass, pin hole testing and packaging. It also includes Table 1 for abrasion resistance and Annex ZA for the normative reference mapping.

The document is therefore mainly a specification and test standard. It tells users what properties to check, which related general standard to apply, and where the acceptance-related methods are defined for this type of enamelled aluminium winding wire.
