Overview

EN ISO 13503-6:2014 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Completion fluids and materials - Part 6" defines a standardized laboratory procedure for measuring leakoff (dynamic fluid loss) of completion fluids. The standard provides a consistent methodology to simulate circulation and fluid loss at a core face under dynamic conditions, where shear and flow alter filter-cake formation and filtrate behaviour. It is applicable to all completion fluids except fluids that chemically react with porous media.

Keywords: EN ISO 13503-6:2014, completion fluids, dynamic fluid loss, leakoff testing, petroleum and natural gas.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Dynamic leakoff testing for completion fluids (excludes fluids that react with porous media).
  • Cell types: Defines two principal test cells - round cell and proppant conductivity cell - with schematics and port identification for inlet/outlet, core placement, gap and leakoff outlet.
  • Test parameters:
    • Temperature control: Fluid and cell temperatures measured to ±1 °C and stabilized to within ±3 °C of test temperature.
    • Pressure control: Test (differential) pressure controlled to within ±5% of design pressure; fluid pressure/backpressure definitions provided.
    • Shear rate and shear-history: Shear rate selection and optional shear-history simulator to reproduce field-like shear exposure.
    • Permeability considerations: Notes on dynamic effects for low-permeability (< 1.0 mD) and high-permeability (> 50 mD) formations.
  • Test procedure: Core preparation, cell assembly (round and proppant cells), run procedures and filtrate collection.
  • Calculations and reporting:
    • Derivation of leakoff coefficients using quadratic regression with time and square-root-of-time variables.
    • Shear rate calculations, calculation examples, and recommended content for test reports.
  • Calibration and instrumentation: All calibrations to follow manufacturer recommendations; precision and units guidance (SI with optional USC units).

Applications and users

This standard is used to:

  • Evaluate completion fluid performance related to fluid loss and filter-cake formation under flowing/sheared conditions.
  • Support selection and optimization of completion and stimulation fluids for drilling, fracturing, gravel-pack and well-completion operations.
  • Provide reproducible lab data for R&D, product development, quality control and technical acceptance.

Primary users:

  • Petroleum and natural gas service companies, completion fluid manufacturers and testing laboratories.
  • Drilling/completion engineers, reservoir engineers and laboratory technicians involved in fluid selection and well-treatment design.

Related standards

  • ISO 13503 series (completion fluids and materials), notably:
    • ISO 13503-1: measurement of viscous properties of completion fluids
    • ISO 13503-4: static leakoff testing procedures
    • ISO 13503-5: proppant conductivity testing

EN ISO 13503-6:2014 provides a reproducible, industry-recognized protocol for dynamic leakoff testing, making it essential for laboratories and operators focused on completion fluid performance and well integrity.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

ISO 13503-6:2014(E)
Introduction
The objective of this part of ISO 13503 is to provide a procedure for measuring fluid loss (leakoff) under
dynamic conditions. This procedure was compiled on the basis of several years of comparative testing,
debate, discussion and continued research by the industry.
Dynamic fluid loss testing consists of a simulation of the circulation process where completion fluid
loss occurs at a core face with appropriate shear conditions. Under dynamic conditions, the filter cake
deposition and fluid loss behaviour are different to those of fluid loss under static conditions.
Laboratory leakoff tests have shown that there is a dynamic effect for low-permeability formations,
i.e. < 1,0 mD. This is due to the fact
