- Abstract
This document gives the definitions and specifies the minimum requirements for injection moulded, extruded and thermoformed thermoplastics boxes, including integral components, used in underground systems for infiltration, attenuation and storage of surface water (e.g. storm water) and manufactured from polypropylene (PP) or unplasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-U).
NOTE Non load bearing component(s) of boxes can be manufactured by various methods e.g. extrusion, injection moulding, rotational moulding, thermoforming and low-pressure injection moulding.
Product properties are determined by a combination of material specifications, design and manufacturing process.
Boxes are intended for use in landscape, pedestrian or vehicular traffic areas.
Boxes can either be factory assembled, or site assembled from different components.
Boxes are intended to be used as elements in a modular system where the manufacturer states in the documentation how the boxes are assembled to create a complete infiltration, attenuation or storage system.

kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 is the SIST publication of the draft European Standard for plastic boxes used in underground infiltration, attenuation and storage systems for surface water. It specifies definitions, minimum requirements and test-related documentation for boxes made of PP and PVC-U, for manufacturers, designers, test laboratories and buyers checking product suitability.
What does kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 specifies the boxes used as elements in modular underground systems for surface water, including storm water. It covers injection moulded, extruded and thermoformed thermoplastics boxes, including integral components, and it is written for buried use in landscape, pedestrian or vehicular traffic areas.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, references, terms, symbols, materials, general characteristics, geometry, mechanical characteristics, physical characteristics for injection moulded boxes, and marking plus additional documentation. It also has two normative annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Material characteristics for PP and PVC-U, including the agreed specification between manufacturer and supplier |
| Annex B | Test method for checking sensitivity to non-rigid loading, including the rubber-sheet test setup |
The boxes may be factory assembled or site assembled from different components. The manufacturer has to state in the documentation how the components are assembled to create a complete infiltration, attenuation or storage system.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026?
kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 ties product performance to material, geometry, mechanical behaviour and documentation. In practice, that means the manufacturer has to declare what the product is made of, how it is built, how it is tested, and what structural values can be used in design.
Material requirements
Clause 5 limits the base materials to PP or PVC-U, with additives needed for manufacture or to improve performance. For PP, the final compound shall contain at least 50 % PP by mass, and if calcium carbonate is used it shall be coated calcium carbonate. Reinforcing materials may be used, but their amount has to be declared.
The material for boxes and integral components shall have an agreed specification between the supplier and the manufacturer. Annex A then links that material specification to the tests used to fingerprint the material and confirm long-term performance.
General appearance and geometry
Clause 6 requires internal and external surfaces to be smooth, clean and free from defects that could affect conformity. Sharp edges on the external surface should be avoided, because they can affect handling and installation.
Clause 7 requires dimensions to be measured to EN ISO 3126 with 1 mm accuracy, and the declared length, width, height and functional dimensions shall be met within the declared tolerances. Weight is measured to 0.1 %, and the box weight shall be greater than 98 % of the reference weight. Porosity shall be declared to the nearest 1 %, using the formula in Clause 7, because porosity directly affects storage capacity.
Mechanical performance
Clause 8 is the main performance section. Short-term compression strength is checked in the X, Y and Z directions with EN 17150, with at least three specimens for each direction. The reference value used in the standard is the one-tailed 95 % lower confidence limit, so the declared structural value is based on conservative test data.
Long-term compression strength is required in the vertical direction for all boxes, and in the lateral direction for attenuation and storage boxes. The long-term values are extrapolated to 50 years using prEN 17151-1. This matters because the box is intended to stay buried and carry loads for long periods, not just pass a short test.
Clause 8 also includes optional checks for ultimate lateral deflection, lateral compliance and creep behaviour. Annex B adds a separate check for sensitivity to non-rigid loading by comparing rigid-plate compression with compression using an interlayer of rubber sheets.
Physical characteristics for injection moulded boxes
Clause 9 applies to injection moulded boxes. It checks the effects of heating on the area around injection points, including cracks, delamination or blisters, and it limits how far those defects may extend into the wall. All integral components have to be tested, because the moulded joint area can be critical in service.
Marking and documentation
Clause 10 requires durable marking that stays legible after storage, weathering, handling and installation. The marking shall not create cracks or other defects that could weaken the box.
The manufacturer shall also provide key product information, including material, intended use, colour, declared structural strengths, porosity, dimensions and reference weight. The documentation also has to explain how the components are assembled into the complete modular system and how multilayer design affects declared strength.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 define?
kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 defines the main product and performance terms used to specify these boxes.
- Box - a thermoplastic cuboid-shaped element, with or without sidewalls, used to create a modular system.
- Integral component - a load-bearing component that contributes to the overall strength of the box.
- Modular system - a system made of repeating boxes.
- Porosity - the ratio of available water storage volume to the total envelope cuboid volume of a box.
- Long-term compression strength - the 95 % lower confidence limit of the applied stress for which the sample would survive 50 years without creep rupture.
- Reference value - the value obtained on the material used for the long-term test specimen according to prEN 17151-1.
- Declared value - the value declared by the manufacturer, which cannot be higher than the reference value.
- PP - polypropylene.
- PVC-U - unplasticized polyvinylchloride.
- OIT - oxidation induction time.
Who uses kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026?
kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 is used by manufacturers of surface-water infiltration, attenuation and storage boxes, and by suppliers of PP and PVC-U materials. It is also used by testing laboratories and conformity-assessment bodies that need defined specimen preparation, test methods and acceptance criteria.
Designers and engineers use it when specifying modular underground storage systems for landscape, pedestrian or vehicular traffic areas. Buyers and quality managers use it to check that the declared material, strength, porosity and marking data are complete enough for procurement and acceptance.
What changed in kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 from the previous edition?
kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026 supersedes EN 17152-1:2019+AC:2020. The foreword states these changes compared with that edition:
- Table A.1 adds the minimum number of test specimens.
- Table 2 adds new optional tests.
- Clause 3 adds new definitions, including reference value and declared value.
- The document now refers to the improved prEN 17151-1.
- Subclause 10.2 has been expanded with more information.
- Editorial improvements were made throughout the document.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 17152-1:2026?
