Overview

SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A11:2021 is a European standard developed by CLC/TC 34, focusing on the particular requirements for ground recessed luminaires-luminaires installed flush with the ground surface. This amendment (A11) updates and modifies the original EN 60598-2-13:2006 standard to reflect current safety and technical mandates set by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). The standard supports compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), ensuring safe design, manufacturing, and operation of electrical lighting devices integrated into floors or pavements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
This standard addresses specific safety and performance requirements for ground recessed luminaires used in various environments, ensuring these luminaires comply with strict mechanical, electrical, and environmental protection standards.

  • Safety Requirements
The document defines protection measures against hazards such as electric shock, excessive temperatures, radiation, and mechanical stresses. It ensures that luminaires protect users, domestic animals, and property under all foreseeable circumstances.

  • Mechanical and Environmental Protection
EN 60598-2-13:2006/A11 mandates that ground recessed luminaires must withstand mechanical impacts and environmental influences like moisture, dust, and temperature variations. This is crucial for fixtures installed in public spaces and outdoor environments.

  • Conformity and Compliance
The standard aligns with the essential safety objectives of the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, providing a presumption of conformity for manufacturers. Compliance facilitates market access across CENELEC member countries without additional national modifications.

  • Normative References
It incorporates and refers to EN 60598-1:2015 for general luminaire requirements and testing methods, reinforcing consistency with overarching lighting standards.

Applications

  • Outdoor Public Lighting
Designed for use in pathways, parks, plazas, and other pedestrian areas where luminaires must be flush with the ground to prevent tripping and withstand heavy foot traffic.

  • Architectural and Landscape Lighting
Ideal for illuminating building facades, gardens, and landscape features with discreet, embedded fixtures that blend seamlessly into the surface.

  • Commercial and Urban Spaces
Used in shopping malls, airports, and urban plazas to provide aesthetic illumination while meeting rigorous safety demands for public areas.

  • Transportation Infrastructure
Suitable for installation in airports, train stations, and pedestrian crossings, where luminaires must endure mechanical loads and environmental exposure.

Related Standards

  • EN 60598-1:2015 - Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements and tests
Provides foundational safety, performance, and testing criteria for all types of luminaires, referenced directly by EN 60598-2-13.

  • Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU
Governs the safety requirements for electrical equipment within certain voltage limits in the EU market, with which compliance via EN 60598-2-13 is harmonized.

  • Other Parts of EN 60598 Series
EN 60598 includes various sections detailing special luminaire types and conditions, offering a comprehensive framework for diverse lighting products.
