FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
IEC 62722-2-1 has been prepared by subcommittee 34D: Luminaires, of IEC technical

INTRODUCTION
This document acknowledges the need for relevant tests for luminaires using LED as an
electrical light source. This document is seen in close context with the publication of
simultaneously developed performance standards for luminaires in general and for LED
modules. This document does not consider luminaires designed for LED lamps, which are
covered in IEC 62722-1. Changes in LED luminaires standards have an impact on LED module
standards and vice versa, due to the behaviour of LED. Therefore, for the development of this
document, the mutual consultancy of experts of both products has taken place.
The provisions in this document represent the technical knowledge of experts from the fields of
the semiconductor (LED chip) industry and of the traditional electrical light sources and
luminaires.
As this document has been simultaneously developed and edited with the standard for LED
modules (IEC 62717), where appropriate, the compliance of the LED modules with the
provisions of IEC 62717 can be transferred to the whole luminaire.

LUMINAIRE PERFORMANCE –

Part 2-1: Particular requirements – LED luminaires

1 Scope
This part of IEC 62722 specifies the performance requirements for LED luminaires, together
with the test methods and conditions. It applies to LED luminaires for general lighting purposes.
Semi-luminaires are not covered under the scope of this document.
For some types of luminaires (e.g. decorative or household) the provision of performance data
under the scope of this document is not appropriate.
In this document, the following types of LED luminaires are distinguished.
– Type A – Luminaires using LED modules where compliance with IEC 62717 is given.
– Type B – Luminaires using LED modules where compliance with IEC 62717 is not given.
Luminaires using an LED lamp are covered in IEC 62722-1 and are not within the scope of this
document.
The requirements of this document relate to type testing.
This document covers LED luminaires using LED modules, based on inorganic LED technology
that produces white light. It does not cover luminaires using light sources based on OLED
technology (organic LED technology).
The lifetime of LED luminaires is in most cases much longer than the practical test times.
Consequently, the verification of manufacturer’s lifetime claims is out of the scope of this
document.
Instead of lifetime validation, this document has opted for lumen maintenance categories at a
defined finite test time. Therefore, the category number does not imply a prediction of
achievable lifetime. The categories are lumen-depreciation character categories showing
behaviour in agreement with the manufacturer’s information which is provided before the test
is started.

73 INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
74 ____________
75 LUMINAIRE PERFORMANCE –
76
77 Part 2-1: Particular requirements for LED luminaires
78
79 FOREWORD
80 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national
81 electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all
82 questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities,
83 IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS)
84 and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC
85 National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental
86 and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with
87 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between
88 the two organizations.
89 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
90 of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National
91 Committees.
92 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in
93 that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC
94 cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
95 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to
96 the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and
97 the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
98 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment
99 services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by
100 independent certification bodies.
101 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
102 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of
103 its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any
104 nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication,
105 use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
106 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is indispensable
107 for the correct application of this publication.
108 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent rights.
109 IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

135 INTRODUCTION
136 This document acknowledges the need for relevant tests for luminaires using LED as an electrical light
137 source. The publication is seen in close context with simultaneously developed and edited publication
138 of performance standards for luminaires in general and for LED modules. This document does not
139 consider luminaires designed for LED lamps, which are covered in IEC 62722-1. Changes in the LED
140 luminaires standard will have impact on the LED module standards and vice versa, due to the behaviour
141 of LED. Therefore, in the development of the present document, mutual consultancy of experts of both
142 products has taken place.
143 The provisions in this document represent the technical knowledge of experts from the fields of the
144 semiconductor (LED chip) industry and of those of the traditional electrical light sources and luminaires.
145 As this document has been simultaneously developed and edited with the standard for LED modules
146 (IEC 62717), where appropriate the compliance of the LED modules to the provisions of IEC 62717 can
147 be transferred to the whole luminaire.

149 LUMINAIRE PERFORMANCE –
150
151 Part 2-1: Particular requirements for LED luminaires
152
153 1 Scope
154 This part of IEC 62722 specifies the performance requirements for LED luminaires, together with the
155 test methods and conditions. It applies to LED luminaires for general lighting purposes.
156 Semi-luminaires are not covered under the scope of this document.
157 For some types of luminaires (e.g. decorative/household) the provision of performance data under the
158 scope of this document is not appropriate
159 The following types of LED luminaires are distinguished.
160 Type A – Luminaires using LED modules where evidence of compliance with IEC 62717 is given.
161 Type B – Luminaires using LED modules where no evidence of compliance with IEC 62717 is given.
162 Luminaires using a LED lamp are covered in IEC 62722-1 and not by this document.
163 The requirements of this document only relate to type testing.
164 This document covers LED luminaires using LED modules, based on inorganic LED technology that
165 produces white light. It does not cover luminaires using light sources based on OLED technology
166 (organic LED technology).
167 Life time of LED luminaires is in most cases much longer than the practical test times. Consequently,
168 verification of manufacturer’s life time claims is out of the scope of this document.
169 Instead of life time validation, this document has opted for lumen maintenance categories at a defined
170 finite test time. Therefore, the category number does not imply a prediction of achievable life time. The
171 categories are lumen-depreciation character categories showing behaviour in agreement with
172 manufacturer’s information which is provided before the test is started.
173 2 Normative references
174 The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are
175 indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated

232 5 General requirements
233 Performance requirements given in this document are additional to the requirements in IEC 62722-1,
234 except where in this document alternative methods of measurement or limits are specified.
235 Luminaires are considered within the same family if they have:
236 – LED modules with the same method of control and operation (semi-integrated, integrated);
237 – LED modules with the same classification according to the method of installation (reference is made
238 to IEC 62031:2018, Clause 4) and using LED module of same family as specified in 6.2 of
239 IEC 62717:2014 + A1:2015 + A2:2019 and the same class of protection against electrical shock;
240 – the same design characteristics distinguished by common features of materials, components, and/or
241 method of processing and heat management.
242 6 Test conditions
243 6.1 General test conditions
244 Test conditions for testing electrical and photometric characteristics, lumen maintenance and life are
245 given in Annex A. For a luminaire in a family of luminaires as described in clause 5, the electrical and
246 photometric data may be calculated. When calculations are used or when alternative colorimetric data
247 is derived, the methods and conditions given in annex C shall be used. Annex C is only valid in case of
248 luminaires where a single LED module is used or where all the LED modules are identical. The
249 applicability of Annex C to light source where the light colour is obtained by mixing different spectra
250 emitted by different light sources needs more considerations than those provided by this annex.
251 All tests are measured on “n” LED luminaires of the same type. The number “n” shall be a minimum of
252 products as given in Table 3. LED luminaires used in the endurance tests shall not be used in other
253 tests.
254 Each sample luminaire shall comply with all the relevant tests except for the tests of 10.3 where one
255 sample is required for each of the three separate tests mentioned in Table 2 and Table 3. In order to
256 reduce the time of testing, the manufacturer or responsible vendor may submit additional luminaires or
257 parts of luminaires provided that these are of the same materials and design as the original luminaire
258 and that the results of the test are the same as if carried out on an identical luminaire.

259 LED luminaires with dimming control shall be adjusted to maximum output for all tests.
260 LED luminaires with adjustable CCT shall be adjusted/set to one fixed value as indicated by the
261 manufacturer or responsible vendor.
262 LED luminaires of linear geometry and variable length shall be tested at a length at which the parameters
263 are given (e.g. performance per x cm).
264 6.2 Luminaires using LED modules where evidence of compliance with IEC 62717 is given
265 (Type A)
266 Only the tests for measurement of initial performance as detailed in 6.4 are to be conducted, when the
267 LED module is operated within its temperature limit tp.
268 The information for luminaire design given in IEC 62717:2014 + A1:2015 + A2:2019, Clause B.1,
269 requires LED modules to be operated within their t temperature limit. The t temperature shall be
p p
270 measured according to the thermal test procedure defined in 12.4 of IEC 60598-1, (normal operation).
271 When the luminaire is operating at its own maximum rated ambient performance temperature value (t ),

273 modules operating inside the luminaire shall not be exceeded. The test voltage for the luminaire shall
274 be 1,00 times the rated voltage of the luminaire. In luminaires intended to be supplied with constant
275 current, the test current shall be 1,00 times the rated current of the luminaire.
276 For luminaires for road and street lighting and floodlights intended for outdoor use only, the reduction
277 of the measured temperature according to 3.12.1 of IEC 60598-2-3, and 5.12.1 of IEC 60598-2-5,
278 respectively shall not be applied for the t temperature of the LED module.
