SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 is CEN's Amendment 1 to EN ISO 12312-1:2022 for sunglasses and related eyewear for general use. It updates the test methods, default headforms, optical checks, robustness tests, and product information used for sunglasses intended for general use. Engineers, test labs, quality teams, and buyers can use it to apply the revised requirements to products, labels, and test reports.

What does SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 specify?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 specifies amendments to the general-use sunglasses standard rather than a full standalone technical specification. It revises the base document's references, measurement methods, test set-ups, labelling text, and annex material for electro-optical filters and replacement filters.

The amendment changes clauses 2, 4.4, 5.1, 5.3.1, 5.3.4.2, 5.3.5.1.1 and 5.3.5.1.2, 5.3.5.2.2 and 5.3.5.2.3, 6.3, 7.1 to 7.6, 11.1, 12.1 and 12.2, plus Annex B, Annex C and the Bibliography.

PartWhat it covers
Annex BElectro-optical filters, including photosensitive seizures, light detection, and reaction time testing
Annex CInformation and labelling for uncut and/or unmounted replacement filters

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 mainly tightens how sunglasses are tested and how their claims are described. For users, the practical effect is clearer test geometry, clearer pass/fail criteria, and more specific labelling for filter type and special functions.

Test methods and headforms

Clause 2 replaces the test-method reference with ISO 12311:2023. That means conformity work now relies on the updated test-method standard for sunglasses and related eyewear.

Clause 4.4 sets default headforms when the manufacturer does not specify compatible ones in accordance with ISO 18526-4:2020. Adult's sunglasses use headform 1-M, while children's sunglasses use 1-C6 or 1-C12. In practice, labs need the same headform choice for repeatable fit and test results.

Clause 5.1 says transmittance values are determined according to ISO 18526-2:2020, Clauses 7, 8, 9 and 10. If the direction of measurement is not stated, it is normal to the sample surface at the geometrical centre. This matters because the reported light transmission depends on where and how the sample is measured.

Optical performance and special filter claims

Clause 5.3.1 revises the uniformity requirement for luminous transmittance. It covers uniformly tinted filters, gradient filters, mounted filters, and the difference between left and right lenses. The practical point is that tint variation and left-right mismatch are controlled, especially for products sold as uniform or gradient.

Clause 5.3.4.2 says claimed polarizing filters are tested to ISO 18526-2:2020, Clause 15. Clause 5.3.5.1.1, 5.3.5.1.2, 5.3.5.2.2 and 5.3.5.2.3 add calculation requirements from ISO 18526-2:2020. These updates tie stated optical values to named calculation procedures.

Mechanical performance, wear position, and user information

Clause 6.3 requires prism imbalance testing on the complete sunglass in the as-worn position according to ISO 18526-1:2020, 6.2. Clause 7 revises fracture, deformation, impact, endurance and perspiration checks for the frame and filters. In practice, these changes define how to judge breakage, permanent deformation, and resistance to wear-related exposure.

Clause 7.3 and 7.6 revise impact resistance criteria, and Clause 7.5 sets the perspiration resistance outcome for frame parts and contact areas. Clause 11.1 allows a manufacturer-specified interpupillary distance when a compatible headform is used. Clauses 12.1 and 12.2 update the information supplied with each pair of sunglasses, including the filter category symbol and/or verbal description.

Annex B adds material on photosensitive seizures for electro-optical filters and a schematic apparatus for reaction-time testing. Annex C updates information and labelling for uncut and/or unmounted replacement filters.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 define?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 uses a small set of terms that matter for testing and labelling.

  • Headform - a specified dummy head used to position sunglasses consistently during fit and performance tests.
  • Luminous transmittance - the amount of visible light that passes through the filter, which is the basis for tint and category checks.
  • Gradient filter - a filter whose transmittance changes across its area, so the top and bottom of the lens are not equally tinted.
  • Electro-optical filter - a sunglass filter that changes its state electronically, including the darkened state addressed in Annex B.
  • Prism imbalance (relative prism error) - the difference in prismatic effect between the two eyes, which can affect visual comfort and alignment.
  • As-worn position - the position of the complete sunglass as it is worn, used for testing prism imbalance and related fit-dependent checks.
  • Interpupillary distance - the distance between the centres of the pupils, used here to set the test geometry on a headform.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 is used by sunglass manufacturers, test laboratories, quality managers, and certification or regulatory teams. It is also relevant to purchasers and specifiers who need to check what test method, labelling, and performance claims apply to a product.

In practice, these groups use it for product design, sample testing, conformity assessment, technical file preparation, and reviewing claim wording such as polarizing, electro-optical, or replacement-filter information.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 updates the base standard by replacing the test-method reference with ISO 12311:2023, revising default headforms, and aligning transmittance, uniformity, and calculation rules with the ISO 18526 series. It also revises prism imbalance, fracture and impact language, frame deformation limits, endurance and perspiration provisions, coverage-area wording, and product information requirements.

The amendment moves the photosensitive-seizure material into Annex B, adds reaction-time test wording and a schematic figure, updates Annex C for uncut and/or unmounted replacement filters, and replaces the bibliography reference with ISO 9241-391:2016.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 relies on several companion standards for the detailed test methods.

  • ISO 12311:2023 - provides the test methods for sunglasses and related eyewear.
  • ISO 18526-1:2020 - provides the as-worn testing method used for prism imbalance.
  • ISO 18526-2:2020 - provides transmittance, polarizing, calculation, and reaction-time-related test clauses referenced in the amendment.
  • ISO 18526-3:2020 - provides visual inspection conditions and inspection-based checks used for uniformity and some durability assessments.
  • ISO 18526-4:2020 - provides the headforms referenced for adult's and children's sunglasses.
  • ISO 9241-391:2016 - is cited for photosensitive seizures in Annex B and the Bibliography.

What does the SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 12312-1:2022/kprA1:2026 contains replacement text for a series of clauses in the base standard, not a full rewritten standard. It updates how transmittance is measured, how filter uniformity is judged, how impact and endurance are checked, and how the wearer position is used in testing.

It also contains updated instructions for what information must accompany sunglasses, including the filter category symbol and verbal description, plus extra guidance for electro-optical filters and replacement filters. Table 6 is referenced for category symbols and wording, and Figure B.2 gives a schematic apparatus for reaction-time testing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Amendment 1 to ISO 12312-1:2022 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 94, Personal safety -
protective clothing and equipment, Subcommittee SC 6, and by Technical Committee CEN/TC 85, Eye protective
equipment in collaboration.

4.4  Headforms
Delete the existing text and substitute by the following:
"Unless the manufacturer specifies the headform(s) in accordance with ISO 18526-4:2020 that is/
are compatible with the sunglasses, the test methods where (a) headform(s) is/are required shall use
the headform 1-M for adult's sunglasses and (1-C6) or (1-C12) for children's sunglasses as specified in
ISO 18526-4:2020 as the default”

5.1  Test methods
Delete the first paragraph and substitute by the following:
“Transmittance values shall be determined in accordance with ISO 18526-2:2020, Clauses 7, 8, 9 and 10. If
the direction of measurement is not specified, then the direction of measurement shall be normal to the
surface of the test sample at its geometrical centre.”

5.3.1  Uniformity of luminous transmittance
Delete the existing text and substitute by:
“Filters that are intended to be uniformly tinted shall appear to be visually uniform within a circle
(30 ± 1) mm diameter centred on the reference points and appear to have the same transmittance at the
two reference points when inspected against a white background in accordance with ISO 18526-3:2020, 6.6.
For gradient filters the luminous transmittances shall appear constant in the horizontal direction and have
equal transmittance at the reference points.
Where there is visible non-uniformity, or tilt in case of gradient filters, then, when tested according to
ISO 18526-2:2020, 7.4, the relative difference in the luminous transmittance value between any two points
of the filter within a circle (30 ± 1) mm in diameter centred on the reference point shall not be greater than
15 % (relative to the higher value), except for category 4 where it shall not be greater than 20 %. If a 5 mm
wide portion around the edge of the test sample intrudes into this circular area, then this intrusion shall be
excluded from testing.
The geometric or boxed centre takes the place of the reference point if this is not known.
