Overview
SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A1:2012 defines the particular requirements for ground recessed luminaires, also known as in-ground or floor recessed luminaires. Developed and published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), this standard is crucial for manufacturers, installers, and specifiers involved in the design and application of lighting products that are recessed into ground surfaces. Its detailed requirements help ensure safe and reliable operation for both indoor and outdoor fixed lighting installations.
This standard is aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) designation, reflecting its broad international relevance for safety compliance and performance of luminaires intended for ground installation.
Key Topics
SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A1:2012 focuses on several critical aspects of ground recessed luminaires, including:
- Mechanical Strength: Specifies requirements for resistance to static loads to ensure the luminaire can withstand walking or occasional vehicle transit, helping to maintain product integrity and safety.
- Test Procedures: Outlines consistent and repeatable test methods, such as applying loads with a steel punch and rubber sheet under exact conditions, to verify compliance.
- Material Performance: Addresses the suitability of materials, particularly for resisting static and potential mechanical impacts.
- Safety Considerations: Ensures design requirements help prevent hazards related to ground-recessed lighting, such as unintended movement or water ingress.
Applications
Ground recessed luminaires play a pivotal role in achieving both functional and aesthetic lighting in various settings. Compliance with SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A1:2012 is essential for:
- Public Spaces: Effective for illuminating pathways, plazas, parks, and urban streets, enhancing safety and ambiance.
- Commercial Environments: Used in retail, hospitality, and office landscapes to highlight building features or guide pedestrian flow.
- Residential Installations: Ideal for accent lighting in driveways, garden walkways, and patios.
- Architectural and Landscape Lighting: Enables creative lighting solutions in exterior environments, ensuring lights are both dynamic and resistant to foot or vehicular traffic.
Meeting this standard helps manufacturers deliver reliable, long-lasting, and safe ground recessed luminaires, assuring end-users of product performance in demanding environments.
Related Standards
For comprehensive luminaires safety and performance, the following standards are relevant alongside SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A1:2012:
- EN 60598-1: General requirements and tests for luminaires.
- IEC 60598-2: Series providing particular requirements for different luminaire types.
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) - important for assessing water and dust resistance.
- EN 60598-2-2: Additional requirements for recessed luminaires (non-ground).
Consulting these standards alongside SIST EN 60598-2-13:2007/A1:2012 ensures compliance with the latest EU and international regulations, and supports the safe, efficient use of ground recessed luminaires in a range of environments.
