Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Fundamentals - Concepts, principles and rules (ISO 8015:2011)

This International Standard specifies fundamental concepts, principles and rules valid for the creation, interpretation and application of all other International Standards, Technical Specifications and Technical Reports concerning dimensional and geometrical product specifications (GPS) and verification. This International Standard applies to the interpretation of GPS indications on all types of drawings. For the purposes of this International Standard, the term “drawing” is to be interpreted in the broadest possible sense, encompassing the total package of documentation specifying the workpiece.

Diese Internationale Norm legt die grundlegenden Konzepte, Prinzipien und Regeln fest, die für die Erstellung, Interpretation und Anwendung aller anderen Internationalen Normen, technischen Spezifikationen und technischen Berichten gelten, soweit sie die geometrische Produktspezifikation (GPS) und –prüfung betreffen. Diese Internationale Norm gilt für die Interpretation von GPS-Angaben auf allen Zeichnungsausführungen. Für den Zweck dieser Internationalen Norm ist der Begriff „Zeichnung“ im weitest möglichen Sinne zu interpretieren und schließt das gesamte Paket von Dokumentationen zur Spezifikation des Werkstücks mit ein.

L'ISO 8015:2011 spécifie les concepts, principes et règles fondamentaux permettant de créer, d'interpréter et d'appliquer toutes les autres Normes internationales, Spécifications techniques et Rapports techniques relatifs à la spécification et à la vérification dimensionnelles et géométriques des produits.
Elle est applicable à l'interprétation de tous types de dessins pour lesquels les indications GPS sont utilisées. Pour les besoins de l'ISO 8015:2011, le terme «dessin» est interprété au sens le plus large possible, englobant l'ensemble de la documentation qui spécifie la pièce.

This document (EN ISO 8015:2011) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 213 “Dimensional
and geometrical product specifications and verification” in collaboration with Technical Committee
CEN/TC 290 “Dimensional and geometrical product specification and verification” the secretariat of which is
held by AFNOR.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by December 2011, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by December 2011.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an

Introduction
This International Standard is a geometrical product specification (GPS) standard and is to be regarded as a
fundamental GPS standard (see ISO/TR 14638). It influences all other standards in the GPS matrix system,
i.e. all global, general and supplementary standards, as well as any other kind of document in the GPS matrix
system.
For more detailed information of the relation of this International Standard to other standards and the GPS
matrix model, see Annex A.
This International Standard covers a number of fundamental principles that apply to all GPS standards and
technical product documentation that is based on the GPS matrix system. Until this current version of this
International Standard was published, these principles were implied, but not formulated explicitly.
This International Standard also covers the indication of ISO default specification operators and particularly
the indication of non-default specification operators, either by direct indication or by the use of company-
specific or drawing-specific defaults.
For the purpose of this International Standard, a concept is considered as an abstract idea, a principle is
considered as a standardized truth based on concepts upon which rules are based, and a rule is considered
as a standardized procedure (for action).

1 Scope

4 Fundamental assumptions for the reading of specifications on drawings
4.1 General
The following assumptions regarding the interpretation of tolerance limits are the basis for the overall rules of
the GPS system.
General and individual specifications written on the drawing shall always be respected and are linked by
default to the assumptions given in 4.2 to 4.4.
4.2 Functional limits
It is assumed for interpretation that the functional limits are based on an exhaustive investigation done by
experiment or theory, or a combination of both, so the functional limits are known with no uncertainty.
4.3 Tolerance limits
It is assumed for interpretation that the tolerance limits are identical to the functional limits.
4.4 Workpiece functional level
It is assumed for interpretation that the workpiece functions 100 % within the tolerance limits and 0 % outside
the tolerance limits.
5 Fundamental principles
5.1 Invocation principle
Once a portion of the ISO GPS system is invoked in a mechanical engineering product documentation, the
entire ISO GPS system is invoked, unless otherwise indicated on the documentation, e.g. by reference to a
relevant document.
“Unless otherwise indicated on the documentation” means e.g. that if it is indicated on the documentation that
it has been prepared in accordance with a regional, national or company standard, then that standard and not
the ISO GPS system shall be used to interpret those elements of the specification that are covered by that
standard.

“Tolerancing ISO 8015” can optionally be indicated in or near the title block for information, but is not required
to invoke the ISO GPS system.
NOTE 1 The most common way to invoke the ISO GPS system is to use one or more GPS specifications in a drawing.
NOTE 2 The ISO GPS system is defined in the International Standards published by ISO/TC 213. See also
ISO/TR 14638.
NOTE 3 That “the entire ISO GPS system is invoked” means that e.g. fundamental and global GPS standards apply
and consequently that e.g. the reference temperature given in ISO 1 and the decision rules given in ISO 14253-1 apply
unless otherwise indicated. The purpose of the invocation principle is to provide the formal traceability for these GPS
standards and rules.
5.2 Principle of GPS standard hierarchy
The ISO GPS system is defined in a hierarchy of standards that includes the following types of standards in
the given order:
⎯ fundamental GPS standards;
⎯ global GPS standards;
⎯ general GPS standards;
⎯ complementary GPS standards.
The rules given in standards at a higher level in the hierarchy apply in all cases unless rules in standards at
lower levels in the hierarchy specifically give other rules.
The rules given in fundamental GPS standards, e.g. this International Standard, apply in all cases, unless the
rules in a specific standard at a lower level give other rules that apply within its scope.

geometrical product specifications and verification“ in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Technischen Komitee
CEN/TC 290 „Geometrische Produktspezifikationen und -prüfung“ erarbeitet, dessen Sekretariat vom AFNOR
gehalten wird.
Diese Europäische Norm muss den Status einer nationalen Norm erhalten, entweder durch Veröffentlichung

Einleitung
Dieses internationale Dokument ist eine Norm für die geometrische Produktspezifikation (GPS) und ist als
fundamentale GPS Norm (siehe ISO/TR 14638) anzusehen. Sie beeinflusst alle anderen Normen im
GPS-Matrix-System, d. h. sowohl alle globalen, allgemeinen und ergänzenden Normen, als auch jede
beliebige andere Art von Dokumenten innerhalb des GPS-Matrix-Systems.
Für eine weitergehende ausführliche Information über den Zusammenhang dieser Norm mit anderen Normen
und mit dem GPS-Matrix-Modell siehe Anhang A.
Diese Internationale Norm deckt eine Anzahl grundlegender Prinzipien ab, die auf alle GPS-Normen und auf
jede technische Produktspezifikation, welche auf dem GPS-Matrix-Modell beruht, angewendet werden
können. Bis zur Veröffentlichung dieser Norm waren diese Prinzipien nur implizit und nicht explizit formuliert
worden.
Diese Internationale Norm deckt auch die Angabe der Spezifikationsoperatoren nach ISO und insbesondere
auch die Angabe der Spezifikationsoperatoren in denjenigen anderen Fällen, die entweder durch unmittelbare
Angabe oder durch Verwendung von firmenspezifischen oder zeichnungsspezifischen Festlegungen gegeben
sind.
Dem Zweck dieser Internationalen Norm entsprechend, wird ein Konzept als eine abstrakte Idee, ein Prinzip
als eine genormte, allgemein anerkannte Wahrheit, beruhend auf Konzepten, auf welchen wiederum Regeln
beruhen, und eine Regel als genormtes Verfahren (des Handelns) angesehen.
1 Anwendungsbereich
Diese Internationale Norm legt die grundlegenden Konzepte, Prinzipien und Regeln fest, die für die Erstellung,
Interpretation und Anwendung aller anderen Internationalen Normen, technischen Spezifikationen und
technischen Berichten gelten, soweit sie die geometrische Produktspezifikation (GPS) und –prüfung betreffen.
Diese Internationale Norm gilt für die Interpretation von GPS-Angaben auf allen Zeichnungsausführungen.
Für den Zweck dieser Internationalen Norm ist der Begriff „Zeichnung“ im weitest möglichen Sinne zu
interpretieren und schließt das gesamte Paket von Dokumentationen zur Spezifikation des Werkstücks mit
ein.
2 Normative Verweisungen
Die folgenden zitierten Dokumente sind für die Anwendung dieses Dokuments erforderlich. Bei datierten

4 Grundlegende Annahmen für das Lesen von Spezifikationen auf Zeichnungen
4.1 Allgemeines
Die folgenden Annahmen bezüglich der Interpretation der Toleranzgrenzen sind die Grundlage für die
übergreifenden Regeln des GPS-Systems.
Allgemeine und individuelle auf der Zeichnung eingetragene Spezifikationen müssen immer beachtet werden
und sind standardmäßig mit den in 4.2 bis 4.4 angegebenen Annahmen verbunden.
4.2 Funktionsgrenzen
Für die Interpretation wird angenommen, dass die Funktionsgrenzen auf einer vollständigen Untersuchung
beruhen, die experimentell oder theoretisch oder als eine Kombination von beidem durchgeführt worden ist,
so dass die Funktionsgrenzen ohne Unsicherheit bekannt sind.
4.3 Toleranzgrenzen
Für die Interpretation wird angenommen, dass die Toleranzgrenzen mit den Funktionsgrenzen
übereinstimmen.

4.4 Funktionsniveau des Werkstücks
Für die Interpretation wird angenommen, dass das Werkstück innerhalb der Toleranzgrenzen zu 100 %
funktioniert und außerhalb der Toleranzgrenzen zu 0 %.
5 Elementare Grundsätze
5.1 Grundsatz des Aufrufens
Sobald ein Teilbereich des ISO-GPS-Systems in einer Produktspezifikation des Maschinenbaus aufgerufen
wird, gilt das gesamte ISO-GPS-System als aufgerufen, wenn es nicht anders in der Dokumentation
gekennzeichnet ist, z. B. durch Bezugnahme auf ein entsprechendes Dokument.
„Wenn nichts anderes in der Dokumentation eingetragen ist" bedeutet z. B., dass, wenn in der
Dokumentation angegeben ist, dass diese in Übereinstimmung mit einer regionalen oder nationalen Norm
oder einem firmeneigenen Regelwerk erstellt worden ist und dass dann diese Norm und nicht das
ISO-GPS-System verwendet werden soll, um diejenigen Elemente der Spezifikation zu interpretieren, die
durch diese Norm abgedeckt sind.
„Tolerierung ISO 8015" kann wahlweise zur Information im oder in der Nähe des Titelfeldes angegeben
werden, ist aber nicht erforderlich, um das ISO-GPS-System aufzurufen.
ANMERKUNG 1 Der am meisten übliche Weg um das ISO-GPS-System aufzurufen ist die Verwendung von einer oder
mehreren GPS-Spezifikationen auf einer Zeichnung.
ANMERKUNG 2 Das ISO-GPS-System ist in den durch das ISO/TC 213 veröffentlichten Internationalen Normen
festgelegt. Siehe auch ISO/TR 14638.
ANMERKUNG 3 Der Satz „das gesamte ISO-GPS-System wird aufgerufen" bedeutet, dass zum Beispiel fundamentale
und globale GPS-Normen gelten und konsequenterweise zum Beispiel die Referenztemperatur nach ISO 1 oder die
Entscheidungsregeln nach ISO 14253-1 gelten, sofern nichts anderes angegeben ist. Der Sinn des Grundsatz des
Aufrufens ist es, die formale Nachverfolgbarkeit für diese GPS-Normen und Regeln zu gewährleisten.
5.2 Grundsatz der GPS-Normenhierarchie
Das ISO-GPS-System ist in einer Hierarchie von Normen festgelegt, welche die folgenden Arten von Normen
in der gegebenen Reihenfolge einschließt:
⎯ GPS-Grundnormen;
⎯ globale GPS-Normen;
⎯ allgemeine GPS-Normen;
⎯ ergänzende GPS-Normen.
Die in den Normen eines höheren Niveaus der Hierarchie angegebenen Regeln gelten in allen Fällen, es sei
denn, dass Regeln in Normen eines niedrigeren Niveaus in der Hierarchie eigens andere Regeln angeben.
Die in den GPS-Grundnormen, z. B. in dieser Norm, angegebenen Regeln gelten in allen Fällen, es sei denn,
dass die Regeln in einer speziellen Norm auf einem niedrigeren Niveau andere Regeln angeben, die
innerhalb ihres Geltungsbereiches gültig sind.
Die in globalen GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln, z. B. in ISO 1, gelten in allen Fällen, es sei denn, dass
die Regeln in einer speziellen allgemeinen oder ergänzenden Norm andere Regeln angeben, die innerhalb
ihres Geltungsbereiches gültig sind.

Alle in GPS-Grundnormen und globalen GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln gelten zusätzlich zu den in den
allgemeinen GPS-Normen, z. B. ISO 1101, besonders angegebenen Regeln, außer in den Fällen, in denen
die Regeln in der allgemeinen GPS-Norm ausdrücklich von den in den GPS-Grundnormen und den globalen
GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln verschieden sind und falls die Regeln in einer bestimmten ergänzenden
Norm keine anderen Regeln angeben, die innerhalb ihres Geltungsbereiches gültig sind.
Alle in GPS-Grundnormen, globalen und allgemeinen GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln gelten zusätzlich zu
den in den ergänzenden GPS-Normen, z. B. ISO 2768-1, besonders angegebenen Regeln, mit Ausnahme der
Fälle, bei denen die in den ergänzenden GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln ausdrücklich von den in
GPS-Grundnormen, globalen und allgemeinen GPS-Normen angegebenen Regeln verschieden sind.
5.3 Grundsatz der bestimmenden Zeichnung
Die Zeichnung ist bestimmend. Alle Anforderungen sollen auf der Zeichnung unter Verwendung von
GPS-Symbolen (mit oder ohne Spezifikations-Modifikationssymbole), zugeordneten Standardregeln oder
besonderen Regeln und Verweisungen auf eine dazu in Beziehung stehende Dokumentation, z. B. regionale,
nationale oder firmeneigene Regelwerke, angegeben werden. Infolgedessen können Anforderungen, die nicht
auf der Zeichnung angegeben sind, nicht geltend gemacht werden.
Eine Zeichnung kann Anforderungen enthalten, die sich auf unterschiedliche Zustände der Fertigstellung des
Produktes beziehen. In diesem Fall muss angegeben werden, auf welchen Zustand sich jede der Angaben
bezieht, es sei denn, es ist der endgültige Zustand.
Als Teil des ISO-GPS-Systems gilt diese Internationale Norm und die in ihr festgelegten Grundsätze und
Regeln für alle Produktspezifikationen, bei denen das ISO-GPS-System aufgerufen wird (siehe 5.1), selbst
dann, wenn auf der Zeichnung nicht ausdrücklich auf sie verwiesen wird.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an

Introduction
This International Standard is a geometrical product specification (GPS) standard and is to be regarded as a
fundamental GPS standard (see ISO/TR 14638). It influences all other standards in the GPS matrix system,
i.e., all global, general and supplementary standards, as well as any other kind of document in the GPS matrix
system.
For more detailed information of the relation of this International Standard to other standards and the GPS
matrix model see Annex A.
This International Standard covers a number of fundamental principles that apply to all GPS standards and
technical product documentation that is based on the GPS matrix system. Until this standard was published,
these principles were implied, but not formulated explicitly.
This International Standard also covers the indication of ISO default specification operators and particularly
the indication of non-default specification operators, either by direct indication or by the use of company
specific or drawing specific defaults.
For the purpose of this International Standard, a concept is considered as an abstract idea, a principle is
considered as a standardized truth based on concepts upon which rules are based, and a rule is considered
as a standardized procedure (for action).

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies fundamental concepts, principles and rules valid for the creation,
interpretation and application of all other International Standards, Technical Specifications and Technical
Reports concerning dimensional and Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) and Verification.
This International standard applies to the interpretation of all Technical Product Documentation where GPS
symbology is used.

For the purposes of this document, the definitions of ISO/TS 17450-1, ISO/TS 17450-2, VIM, GUM and the
following apply.

NOTE 1 When standardized by ISO standards, basic GPS specifications are referred to as ISO basic GPS
specifications. When defined by national- or company standards, a similar specific reference is needed.
NOTE 2 A basic GPS specification is expressed without the application of specification modifiers.
NOTE 3 When the ISO basic GPS specification is used, the default specification operator applies. It shall be noted that
currently many default specification operators are under development within ISO/TC 213.

parameter associated with a stated value or a relation that characterises the dispersion of the values that could reasonably
be attributed to the stated value or relation
NOTE 1 A stated value in the GPS field may be a measurement result or a specification limit.
NOTE 2 A relation in the GPS field is normally the difference between the values yielded by two different operators for
the same feature, e.g. a specification operator and an actual verification operator.
NOTE 3 A relation in the GPS field can also be the difference between the value yielded by, e.g. a specification
operator and a value that correlates to the function of the workpiece/feature (the functional operator).
NOTE 4 Uncertainty (measurement uncertainty, specification uncertainty, correlation uncertainty, etc.) quantified in the
GPS-field is always in the meaning of expanded uncertainty according to ISO/TR 14253-2 and GUM.

NOTE For the purposes of this standard, measurement uncertainty is equal to the sum (in the sense given in GUM)
of the method uncertainty and the implementation uncertainty. This note is neither part of the GUM nor the VIM definition.
EXAMPLE The measurement uncertainty for the verification of the upper limit of the specification ∅ 30 ± 0,1 Ⓔ for a
shaft, when the verification is performed by measuring the shaft with a micrometer, is derived from the difference in values
obtained by the micrometer (taking into account the imperfections in the spindle of the micrometer (implementation
uncertainty contributors), as well as the flatness and parallelism of its anvils) and the values obtained by measuring the
diameter of the minimum circumscribed cylinder with a perfect instrument (method uncertainty contribution).

3.1.18
specification uncertainty
uncertainty inherent in an actual specification operator when applied to a real workpiece/feature
NOTE 1 Specification uncertainty is of the same nature as measurement uncertainty and may - if relevant - be part of
an uncertainty budget.
NOTE 2 The specification uncertainty quantifies the ambiguity in the specification operator.
NOTE 3 For the purposes of this standard, specification uncertainty is considered part of the compliance uncertainty.
NOTE 4 Specification uncertainty is a property related to the actual specification operator.
NOTE 5 The magnitude of the specification uncertainty is also dependent on the expected or actual variation of the
geometrical characteristics (deviations of form and angularity) of workpieces.
EXAMPLE The specification uncertainty of step dimension 30 ± 0,1, which does not specify which association shall
be used, is obtained from the range of values that can be obtained with different association criteria.

correlation uncertainty
uncertainty arising from the difference between the actual specification operator and the functional operator
that defines the intended function of the workpiece, expressed in the terms and units of the actual
specification operator
NOTE 1 Correlation uncertainty is if possible expressed in numbers and units comparable to the specification given.
NOTE 2 Correlation uncertainty is usually not related to one single GPS specification. Usually it takes a number of
single GPS specifications to simulate a function (e.g. size, form and surface texture for the same feature of the workpiece).
EXAMPLE If the functional operator for a shaft is the ability of the shaft to run in a hole with a seal for 2000 hours
without leaking and the specification operator is ∅ 30 h7 for the size of the shaft and Ra 1,5 using a 2,5 mm filter for the
surface texture of the shaft, then the correlation uncertainty is derived from this specification’s ability to ensure that:
- a shaft complying with the specification will run for 2000 hours without leaking, and;
- a shaft that does not comply with the specification will not run for 2000 hours without leaking.

3.1.20
total uncertainty
sum (in the sense given in GUM) of the correlation uncertainty, the specification uncertainty, the measurement
uncertainty
NOTE The magnitude of total uncertainty value indicates the level of divergence of the actual verification operator
from the functional operator.
EXAMPLE If the functional operator for a shaft is the ability of the shaft to run in a hole with a seal for 2000 hours without
leaking and the specification operator is ∅ 30 h7 for the size of the shaft and Ra 1,5 using a 2,5 mm filter for the surface
texture of the shaft, then the total uncertainty is derived from the ability to determine, based on measurements with, e.g. a
surface texture instrument and a micrometer, whether:
- a shaft measured to be in compliance with the specification will run for 2000 hours without leaking, and whether;
- a shaft that is measured to not be in compliance with the specification will not run for 2000 hours without leaking.
