kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 is a SIST publication of IEC 60704-2-8 for measuring airborne acoustical noise from electric shavers, hair clippers and trimmers. It specifies particular test conditions, appliance preparation, positioning, measurement and reporting rules for domestic and similar electric appliances, so manufacturers and test laboratories can generate comparable noise data.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 gives the particular requirements for the IEC 60704 series when the product is an electric shaver, hair clipper or trimmer for domestic and similar use. It is written as a companion to IEC 60704-1:2021 and adds or modifies the general requirements where needed for these appliances.

The document is organized around the following parts:

PartWhat it covers
Clause 1Scope
Clause 3Terms and definitions
Clause 4Measurement methods and acoustical environments
Clause 6Operation and location of appliances under test
Clause 7Measurement of sound pressure levels
Clause 9Information to be recorded
Clause 10Information to be reported
Annex A (normative)Standard test table
Annex B (normative)Test enclosure

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026?

The main requirements focus on how to prepare the appliance, how to measure it, and how to report the result. In practice, this is the part that tells a lab which settings, positions and operating conditions to use so results are repeatable and comparable.

Scope and measuring methods

Clause 1 limits the document to electric shavers, hair clippers or trimmers for domestic and similar use. It also notes that non-electric products, such as spring-driven devices, are outside the scope, while similar electrically operated devices may be considered if appropriate.

Clause 4 allows the use of ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2 and ISO 3744 for measuring noise from these appliances. It also warns that audible discrete tones can increase measurement variation, so extra microphone or source positions may be needed. That matters because tone-like noise can make a single reading less representative.

Measurement uncertainty

Clause 4 includes standard deviations for sound power levels and for declaration and verification. These values matter when a manufacturer states a noise emission value or when a test result is checked against a declared value under IEC 60704-3.

Appliance preparation and operating condition

Clause 6 requires the appliance to be prepared as for ordinary shaving, clipping or trimming. It shall be clean, including the hair chamber if there is one, and oiled with a light oil unless the manufacturer specifies another cleaning or lubrication method.

Before measurements, the appliance shall have been operated for at least 10 minutes unless the manufacturer says otherwise, and then stabilized for at least 20 seconds at the highest speed without load. Battery powered units use fully loaded batteries, rechargeable units use fully charged batteries and are disconnected from external power. The rechargeable unit must still be able to run for at least 10 minutes after the measurement.

Operating settings and positioning

Clause 6 requires no-load measurement at the highest speed setting if speed control exists. If there are multiple cutting heads or a selector, the setting that gives the highest noise value shall be used. For shavers with a trimmer accessory, the document distinguishes measurements with shaving heads only, and optionally with the trimmer accessory as well.

Clause 6 also defines the test position. The appliance is placed horizontally, with the hand-held end toward microphone 6, at a height of 25 cm above the floor. The cutting teeth should point upward as far as possible, and the skin-contact surface should be vertical as far as possible. This standardizes the geometry so labs measure the same sound field.

Sound pressure level measurement

Clause 7 requires the A-weighted sound pressure level to be time-averaged for at least 30 seconds. For shavers with an operational cycle, the loudest part of the cycle is measured, or three consecutive cycles if that loud part is shorter than 30 seconds. That matters because short peaks can otherwise be missed.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 define?

  • rechargeable shaver, hair clipper or trimmer - A unit supplied by a secondary battery that belongs to the appliance.
  • battery powered shaver, hair clipper or trimmer - A unit supplied by primary batteries.
  • trimmer accessory - An accessory incorporated in a shaver to groom facial hair such as a moustache, beard or side whiskers.
  • A-weighted sound pressure level - The noise quantity used for the measurement result, with A-weighting to reflect human hearing response.
  • operational cycle - The repeating operating pattern of a shaver, where the loudest part is the part to be measured.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026?

This standard is used by test laboratories, manufacturers of electric shavers, hair clippers and trimmers, and quality or compliance teams that need comparable airborne noise measurements. It is also relevant to buyers and certification bodies that evaluate declared noise emission values or compare product noise performance. The practical task is to set up the appliance the same way every time and report the same kind of acoustic result.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 is the third edition and it replaces the second edition published in 2020. The stated technical changes are alignment with IEC 60704-1:2021, a redefinition of the stabilizing period and battery status check, and a redefinition of the appliance position during test.

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 is intended to be used with IEC 60704-1:2021, which provides the general requirements for the series. It also refers to IEC 60704-3 for determining and verifying declared noise emission values.

For measurement methods, the document points to ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2 and ISO 3744. These standards provide the test room and comparison methods used when measuring sound from shavers, hair clippers or trimmers.

What does the kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-8:2026 document contain?

The document contains the special test code for airborne acoustical noise from electric shavers, hair clippers or trimmers, together with the added terms, measurement conditions, operating rules and reporting requirements needed for this product group. It includes Table 1 and Table 2 for standard deviations, and Figure 101 showing the appliance position during test. The bibliography also points to IEC 61254 and IEC 62863 as related documents.

47 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
48 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
49 misinterpretation by any end user.
50 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
51 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
52 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
53 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
54 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
55 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
56 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
57 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
58 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
59 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
60 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
61 Publications.
62 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
63 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
64 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
65 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
