Overview

EN 840-1:2020 - "Mobile waste and recycling containers - Part 1: Containers with 2 wheels with a capacity up to 400 l for comb lifting devices - Dimensions and design" is the CEN European standard that defines dimensional, design and marking requirements for two‑wheeled mobile waste and recycling containers intended for use with comb lifting devices. It applies to containers with nominal volumes up to 400 L and ensures interchangeability, safety and compatibility with approved lifting equipment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classes
    • Covers two classes: Class I (up to 200 L) and Class II (200–400 L), with a list of commonly used nominal volumes and tolerances.
    • Nominal volumes follow the table in the standard; tolerances and measurement methods reference EN 840-5.
  • Dimensions and functional design
    • Defines mandatory functional and safety dimensions (see Tables 3 and 4) to guarantee compatibility with comb lifting devices.
    • Specifies two frontal receiver forms (Form A or B) for interfacing with lifting equipment.
  • Structural and performance criteria
    • Containers must carry a nominal load computed as 0.4 kg/dm³ × nominal volume.
    • Each wheel must withstand a static load of 100 kg.
    • Surfaces must be smooth and free of foreign bodies or flaws; containers must be immobilisable by design.
  • Lid and wheel requirements
    • Lids must completely cover openings, have at least two fixing points and at least one means of opening; lids should open automatically during emptying cycles.
    • Larger wheels are permitted within specified limits (see standard for dimensional allowances).
  • Testing, safety and marking
    • Performance tests and capacity measurement methods are covered by EN 840-5; health and safety requirements follow EN 840-6.
    • Mandatory marking: reference to EN 840-1, nominal volume, manufacturer/trademark, total permissible mass (kg), and year/month of manufacture.
  • Designation
    • Standard provides a designation format (e.g., Container EN 840-1 240 A 96) indicating standard number, nominal volume, frontal receiver form and nominal load.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of mobile waste and recycling containers designing 2‑wheel containers for municipal, commercial or residential use.
  • Producers of refuse collection vehicles and lifting devices (comb lifters) who require compatible container interfaces.
  • Municipal waste managers, procurement officers and specifiers who select containers to ensure operational safety, interchangeability and compliance.
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors using referenced test methods (EN 840-5 / EN 840-6).

Related standards

  • EN 840-5: Performance requirements and test methods (capacity measurement)
  • EN 840-6: Safety and health requirements
  • EN 1501-5 (in preparation): Lifting devices for refuse collection vehicles
  • EN ISO 11469: Plastic identification and marking

Practical takeaway: EN 840-1:2020 standardizes dimensions and key design features for 2‑wheel containers up to 400 L to ensure safe, interchangeable, and testable use with comb lifting systems across Europe.

4 Volumes
This standard identifies the two classes of containers:
— Class I - small size (nominal volume up to 200 l);
— Class II - large size (nominal volume between 200 l and 400 l).
Within the two above-mentioned classes of containers the volumes shown in Table 1 are identified.

−5 −5 −6 −12 −10 −10 −5 −5 −5 −25

For methods of measuring capacity, see EN 840-5.
The volumes shown in Table 1 correspond to mobile waste and recycling container's capacities at
present used in Europe. Since there are some overlapping capacities due to the tolerances, client and
manufacturer shall decide while ordering the capacity chosen.
Nominal volumes different from those referenced in Table 1 can be used by agreement between user
and manufacturer. The tolerance of the volumes shall be ± 10 % maximum measured according to
EN 840-5. Table 2 includes examples of the most frequent assignments of classes and volumes of the
containers.

5 Dimensions and design
5.1 The design of the containers need not correspond to the drawings given in Figure 1. The
functional dimensions given in Tables 3 and 4 shall be respected. For compatibility in lifting devices, the
container shall correspond to its dimensions within the selected class type (Table 3, Table 4).
5.2 The container shall be constructed so that when it is unloaded or loaded with a nominal load
(see Clause 6), it fits on an approved compatible lifting device. It shall be automatically locked safely
into the lifting device during the lifting operation. The frontal receiver shall correspond to one of the
options given in Fig
