Overview

EN 15354:2022 (CEN) provides a standardized framework for the characterization and designation of extruded and/or calendered, non-reinforced film and sheeting made of plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC‑P). The standard applies to products with nominal thicknesses from 0.05 mm to 1 mm and defines the associated test methods used to assess material, dimensional, colour, surface, mechanical and thermal characteristics.

This edition transposes the previous technical specification into a full European Standard, updates normative references and revises key tables. It also includes a normative annex (Annex A) that describes the method for determining emboss retention.

Key Topics

  • Scope and definitions: Clear terms for film vs. sheeting, nominal thickness, roll dimensions and directions (MD/TD).
  • Appearance assessment: Visual inspection requirements and recommended sampling (minimum inspected area = 2 m (MD) × width (TD)).
  • Conditioning and ageing: Conditioning according to EN ISO 291 and options for artificial or natural ageing using EN ISO 4892 series and EN ISO 877.
  • Material characterization: Tests for density (EN ISO 1183), ash content (EN ISO 3451-5), and plasticizer loss or migration (EN ISO 176, EN ISO 177).
  • Dimensional and colour tests: Thickness, width and roll length (ISO 4591/4592/4593), colour measurement (EN ISO 11664, EN ISO 18314-1) and colour change after exposure (EN ISO 4892-1/2, ISO 4582).
  • Surface and mechanical properties: Resistance to liquids (EN ISO 2812), emboss retention (Annex A), tensile properties (EN ISO 527-1/-3), tear resistance (EN ISO 6383-1/-2), blocking (EN ISO 11502), and thermal behaviour (ISO 8570, ISO 11501).

Applications

EN 15354:2022 is relevant to manufacturers, purchasers, test laboratories and specifiers working with PVC‑P film and sheeting in industries such as:

  • flooring and wall coverings
  • packaging and industrial sheeting
  • decorative laminates and coated products
  • technical membranes and protective films

Benefits of applying the standard:

  • Consistent product specification for procurement and supply agreements
  • Harmonised test methods to support quality control and conformity assessment
  • Clear designation rules to simplify product identification and traceability

Example designation (from the standard):

SHEETING AAAA, EN 15354, PVC‑P, N, UE, 2 m, 300 µm

(Transparent, non‑embossed sheet, 2 m nominal width, 300 µm nominal thickness.)

Related Standards

EN 15354 references a range of international and European test standards that should be used in conjunction with it, including but not limited to:

  • EN ISO 291 (conditioning)
  • EN ISO 1183 (density)
  • EN ISO 527-1 / EN ISO 527-3 (tensile properties)
  • EN ISO 4892 series and EN ISO 877 (ageing and weathering)
  • EN ISO 2812 (resistance to liquids)

For procurement, testing or compliance programs, refer to EN 15354:2022 together with the normative references listed in its clauses and Table 1 to ensure correct method selection and parameter agreement between manufacturer and purchaser.
