This European Standard specifies requirements and tests for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) intended for the accommodation, and where necessary for the electrically protective separation, of insulated conductors, cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and/or communication systems installations. The maximum voltage of these installations is 1 000 V a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. Slotted cable trunking systems are intended for mounting inside cabinets in electrical and/or communication system installations. This European Standard does not apply to conduit systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, power track systems or equipment covered by other standards. This European Standard shall be used in conjunction with EN 50085-1:2005 “Cable trunking systems and cable ducting systems for electrical installations – Part 1: General requirements” which is referred to in this document as Part 1. Wherever reference is made in this European Standard to EN 50085 1:2005 this does not apply to cable ducting systems.

Overview

EN 50085-2-3:2010 is a European CENELEC standard that sets particular requirements and tests for slotted cable trunking systems (CTS) intended for installation inside cabinets used in electrical and communication system installations. It covers the accommodation and, where required, the electrically protective separation of insulated conductors, cables and certain electrical equipment for systems up to 1 000 V a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. This Part 2-3 is to be used in conjunction with EN 50085-1:2005 (Part 1: General requirements).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to slotted cable trunking systems mounted in cabinets; excludes conduit, cable tray, ladder and power track systems.
  • System definition and components
    • Defines slotted trunking length, slotted walls, wall fingers, break-out lines and other system components.
  • Mechanical requirements and tests
    • Cable support test: sample length (250 ± 5 mm), non-metallic/composite aging at manufacturer-declared temperature for 168 ± 4 h, fixings pattern, and loading 0.8 g/mm² of declared usable area. Deflection limits: ≤ 10% of height/width with a maximum of 10 mm after 120 min.
    • Impact test: specific exclusions (wall fingers, knockouts, within 50 mm of ends); cracks of wall fingers are ignored.
  • Dimensions and fixing recommendations
    • Preferred fixing-hole patterns by trunking width (notably cutoffs at 12.5 mm and 62.5 mm), recommended hole spacing of 25 mm or 50 mm for wider trunking.
  • Thermal and fire hazard
    • Thermal clauses of Part 1 apply. Fire hazard: slotted CTS shall either not ignite, or if ignited shall not continue to burn once the ignition source is removed.
  • Marking, documentation and classification
    • Marking and documentation requirements from Part 1 apply; classification includes intended mounting positions (vertical/horizontal, cover orientations).

Practical applications

  • Standardizes product design, testing and verification for slotted cable trunking systems in control cabinets, distribution cabinets and communication enclosures.
  • Used when specifying internal cabinet wiring channels for machine panels, switchgear, telecom racks and electrical enclosures where cable routing, segregation and protection are required.
  • Facilitates compliance, safety and interoperability for manufacturers, test labs and procurement.

Who should use this standard

  • Cabinet and enclosure manufacturers
  • Cable trunking (CTS) product designers and test houses
  • Electrical installers, panel builders and system integrators
  • Compliance engineers and procurement/specification teams in industry and building services

Related standards
