Bio-based solvents - Requirements and test methods
This European Standard sets the requirements for bio-based solvents in terms of their bio-based content, their technical properties and test methods. It lays down the characteristics and details for assessment of bio-based solvents that:
- are fit for purpose in terms of performance related properties;
- comply with the health, safety and environmental requirements which apply generally to solvents; and
- are derived from biomass.
This European Standard specifies solvent classes, based on the percentage of bio-based carbon content and bio-based content.
NOTE EN 16575 defines the term "bio-based" as derived from biomass and clarifies that "bio-based" does not imply "biodegradable". In addition, "biodegradable" does not necessarily imply the use of "bio-based" material.
In addition, this document sets requirements on information to be provided regarding sustainability aspects.
- die gebrauchstauglich sind bezüglich leistungsbezogener Eigenschaften;
- leurs performances attendues pour leur utilisation en relation avec leurs propriétés ;
Topila biološkega izvora - Zahteve in preskusne metode
– primerna za uporabo z vidika lastnosti, povezanih z učinkovitostjo;

Overview - EN 16766:2017 (CEN)
EN 16766:2017, published by CEN, defines requirements and test methods for bio‑based solvents. The standard sets out how to assess solvents that are derived from biomass for their bio‑based content, technical performance, and health, safety and environmental properties. It also defines solvent classification by bio‑based carbon content and bio‑based content, and requires disclosure of sustainability information to support transparent business‑to‑business communication.
Key SEO keywords: EN 16766:2017, bio‑based solvents, CEN standard, bio‑based content, test methods, Hansen solubility parameters.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Applies to solvents derived from biomass; clarifies that “bio‑based” ≠ “biodegradable” (see EN 16575).
- Performance properties
- Requires reporting of chemical composition and measurable technical properties used for solvent selection: solvency power, distillation behaviour, evaporation rate, colour, density and kinematic viscosity.
- Recommends quantitative solvency characterisation using Hansen solubility parameters (Annex A) or equivalent correlated scales.
- Health, safety and environment
- Bio‑based solvents must meet the same HSE requirements that apply generally to solvents (including relevant chemical classification and labelling rules).
- Bio‑based content and classification
- Specifies solvent classes based on percentages of bio‑based carbon content and bio‑based content; applicable measurement methods are referenced.
- Sustainability and information
- Requires provision of sustainability‑related information and supports use of harmonized disclosure templates (Annex B) for B2B communication.
- Test methods
- References standardized test methods (e.g., EN ISO 12185 for density, EN ISO 3405 for distillation) and radiocarbon/material balance approaches for bio‑based content (EN 16640, EN 16785 series).
Applications and who uses it
- Solvent manufacturers - to classify and declare bio‑based content and to demonstrate technical equivalence to fossil solvents.
- Formulators and downstream users (paints, coatings, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, cleaning agents) - to select solvents based on solvency power, evaporation, and safety data.
- Procurement and sustainability teams - to compare bio‑based options and capture sustainability information for product declarations and supply‑chain communication.
- Regulators and testing labs - for consistent measurement and labelling of bio‑based solvents.
