Overview
EN ISO 7225:2007 (ISO 7225:2005) specifies the design, content and application of precautionary labels for gas cylinders. It covers labels intended for individual cylinders containing single gases or gas mixtures and aligns label requirements with the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Labels for cylinder bundles or bundle labels are explicitly excluded.
Keywords: EN ISO 7225:2007, ISO 7225, gas cylinders, precautionary labels, hazard labels, transport of dangerous goods
Key Topics and Requirements
- Label design and composition
- Precautionary labels consist of a diamond-shaped hazard label (primary and, where needed, subsidiary labels) plus a panel for identification and supplementary information.
- When multiple hazard diamonds are used, subsidiary labels are placed to the right of the primary label; overlapping is permitted but the primary hazard must remain fully visible.
- Size and placement
- Minimum label sizes are specified according to cylinder outside diameter (three size classes) to ensure legibility on small through large cylinders.
- Preferred location is on the rounded part of the cylinder or immediately below (maximum 50 mm); small cylinders (10 L and below) may use the cylinder body or neck ring when dimensions permit.
- Colour and symbols
- Label colours, symbols, numerals and text must comply with the UN Model Regulations (transport regulations) so hazard class and division are instantly recognizable.
- Panel content
- The panel shall include transport-identification information such as the proper shipping name and UN number, plus any supplementary hazard instructions, name and address of the filler, and filling mass where applicable.
- Materials and durability
- Labels and adhesives must be durable under foreseeable transport, storage and use conditions and compatible with cylinder surfaces.
- Filler and maintenance responsibilities
- The filler is responsible for correct attachment, replacement and legibility of labels. Old labels must be removed unless the new label information is identical.
Practical Applications / Who Uses This Standard
- Cylinder manufacturers and label suppliers - for producing compliant labels.
- Gas filling and distribution companies - to ensure correct marking before dispatch.
- Logistics and transport operators - to meet transport safety and regulatory requirements.
- Workplace safety officers, emergency responders and inspectors - to quickly identify gas hazards and take appropriate precautions.
- Regulatory bodies and auditors - for conformity assessments and enforcement.
Related Standards
- ISO 13769 - Gas cylinders - Stamp marking
- ISO 32 - Gas cylinders for medical use - Marking for identification of content
- UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Model Regulations
EN ISO 7225:2007 helps ensure consistent, durable and legible hazard communication on individual gas cylinders, improving safety in filling, transport, storage and emergency response.

ISO 7225:2005(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 7225 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 58, Gas cylinders, Subcommittee SC 4, Operational
requirements for gas cylinders.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 7225:1994), which has been technically revised.
ISO 7225:2005(E)
Introduction
This International Standard belongs to a series of standards specifying gas cylinder identification
requirements:
ISO 13769, Gas cylinders — Stamp marking
ISO 7225, Gas cylinders — Precautionary labels
ISO 32, Gas cylinders for medical use — Marking for identification of content
The purpose of using precautionary labels on gas cylinders is to facilitate the identification of each cylinder
and its content and to warn of the principal hazards associated with the said contents. Such labels can also
serve to give other essential information such as the names and chemical formula of the gas or gas mixture
and supplementary instructions on precautionary measures.
