SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 is a CENELEC European Standard for electrical emergency stop devices with a mechanical latching function. It specifies the construction, marking, performance and test methods for control circuit devices and switching elements used to initiate an emergency stop signal in low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. It is identical to IEC 60947-5-5:2026 and is read with the general 60947 rules.

What does SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 specifies detailed requirements for electrical emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function and how they are tested. It applies to electrical control circuit devices and switching elements used to start an emergency stop signal, including devices that have their own enclosure and are installed according to the product documentation.

The document is organized into the usual 60947 series structure: Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Classification, Characteristics, Product information, Normal service, mounting and transport conditions, Constructional and performance requirements, and Tests. It also contains two normative annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AProcedure to determine reliability data for electrical emergency stop devices used in functional safety applications, including durability-test based methods and Weibull modelling.
Annex BAdditional requirements for illuminated push-button type emergency stop devices, including active/inactive signalling by illumination.

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 is focused on electrical devices with mechanical latching. It is not for non-electrical emergency stop applications such as hydraulic or pneumatic devices, and it is not for emergency stop devices without mechanical latching function. The document also notes that acoustic noise is not treated as a relevant hazard for these devices.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 concentrates on how the device is identified, how it behaves during operation, and how it survives mechanical and environmental stress. For a buyer or engineer, the most important point is that the standard tells you which device type to specify, what information must be supplied, and which tests prove the emergency stop function remains reliable.

Device type, classification and product information

Clause 4 and Clause 5 classify emergency stop devices by actuation method, additional functions and mounting. The standard distinguishes at least push-button and trip wire switch types, and it also recognizes additional functions such as illumination, trigger mechanism, resetting means and locking mechanism. In practice, this helps you specify the exact device form and mounting arrangement you need.

Clause 6 requires product information that supports correct installation and use. For push-button devices, the documentation has to state the resetting or unlatching method, any trigger mechanism, and any illumination function. For trip wire switches, the documentation also has to give the maximum wire or rope length, tension setting information, support distances, straight-run guidance, and maintenance advice for pulleys and eyelets.

Marking and visual identification

Clause 6 requires the emergency stop symbol IEC 60417-5638:2002-10 where a symbol is needed for clarification. When reset is done by rotation, the unlatching direction must be identified and the identification color should match the actuator closely to avoid confusion. For trip wire switches, marker flags may be used to improve visibility.

The constructional requirements in Clause 8 also fix the usual colors: push-buttons are red with a yellow background where there is a background, ropes or wires are red, marker flags are yellow or red-and-yellow, the integral resetting actuator is blue, and setting indicators use green for rest position and yellow for actuated position. In practice, these color rules help operators recognize the device quickly in an emergency.

Operation, latching and direct opening action

Clause 8 requires direct opening action for the normally closed contact elements that generate the emergency stop signal. The device must also keep the emergency stop signal latched until it is manually reset, and it must not latch unless the emergency stop signal has actually been generated. This matters because the device has to fail in a way that still protects the machine stop function.

The standard also requires the device to operate and reset under normal service conditions, and shocks or vibrations must not cause unwanted opening, closing, latching or unlatching. For push-button devices, actuation must be possible by a one-handed continuous single motion, and reset has to be by rotation, pulling, or a key. For trip wire switches, the wire or rope has to trigger the stop below 200 N and below 400 mm deflection, withstand at least 10 times the designed tension, and any loss of tension must cause actuation.

Tests and verification

Clause 9 sets out the verification program. Type tests include robustness of the actuator, mechanical durability, conditioning, shock, vibration, opening and latching tests, actuation and resetting tests, impact tests for push-button types, and EMC tests as applicable. The durability test uses 6 050 cycles, which gives a practical check on the latch parts and contacts over repeated use.

The conditioning procedures expose devices to dry heat, damp heat, cold and salt mist before the shock, vibration and opening/latching tests. The shock and vibration tests check that contacts do not chatter and that the latching mechanism stays in the correct state. For readers responsible for validation, this means the standard is not just about initial function - it checks behavior after environmental stress and repeated operation.

Reliability data and functional safety

Clause 6.5 and Annex A address reliability data for functional safety applications. The key parameter is B10D, the number of cycles by which 10% of the device population will have failed dangerously. Annex A gives a procedure based on monitored durability testing and Weibull modelling, so the data in product documentation can support safety-related design work.

Annex B adds special requirements for illuminated push-button devices. If illumination is used to show whether the device is active or inactive, the lighting must not impair the emergency stop function, and the signalling function may need a risk assessment with a required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) or required Performance Level (PLr).

What terms does SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 define?

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 defines the key terms needed to specify and test emergency stop devices consistently.

  • Emergency stop function - a function intended to avert or reduce hazards and started by a single human action.
  • Emergency stop device - a manually operated control circuit device used to initiate an emergency stop function.
  • Actuating system - the mechanical parts that transmit the actuating force to the contact elements.
  • Latching - the function or means that holds the actuating system in the actuated position until separate manual reset.
  • Resetting - the manual action that returns the actuating system from the actuated position to the rest position.
  • Direct opening action - contact separation caused directly by specified movement of the actuator through non-resilient members.
  • Trip wire switch - an emergency stop device whose actuator is a rope, a wire or similar means.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 is used by machine builders, control panel builders, emergency stop device manufacturers, and switchgear and controlgear designers. It is also used by test laboratories, certification bodies, quality managers and buyers who need to check that a device type, marking, test result or reliability declaration fits the intended application. In practice, it supports selection, product design, testing, documentation and conformity assessment for machinery and low-voltage control equipment.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN IEC 60947-5-5:2026 is the second edition and it cancels and replaces the 1997 edition and its amendments. The significant technical changes stated in the document are:

  • the clause numbers and names have been reshaped to align with the rest of the 60947 series;
  • the test method has been reviewed so the latch mechanism can be determined more appropriately against the document requirements;
  • Annex B has been added for illuminated push-button type emergency stop devices, including active/inactive signalling by color change.
