The object of this standard is to protect telecommunication lines and connected equipment against the direct and indirect influence of lightning by limiting the risk of damage due to overvoltages and overcurrents, liable to occur in these lines, to values which are lower than or equal to tolerable risk of damage. The type of building can also have an effect on the risk assessment of lightning damage to telecommunication lines, as well as the physical layout of the equipment installation. However, these and other similar aspects are covered by appropriate, specific standards and are beyond the scope of this standard. Fibre optical cable with metallic pairs in the cable core must be protected, following the requirements of this standard, together with those requirements defined in EN 61663-1.

Objective is to limit the number of possible primary failures occurring in the optical fibre cable in a specified installation to within values which are lower than or equal to the limit value, defined as the tolerable frequency of primary failures. Gives the method for calculating the possible number of primary failures, choosing the feasible protective measures and indicating the tolerable frequency of primary failures. Secondary failures are not considered. The tests described in annex G are convenient only for the risk evaluation associated with lightning in fibre optic installations. Tests for the qualification of a cable design are outside the scope of this standard.

This European Standard specifies the minimum level of resistibility of equipment having telecommunication port(s) to overvoltages and overcurrents. This European Standard covers telecommunication equipment installed at customer premises as shown in Figure 1. Overvoltages or overcurrents covered by this European Standard are surges due to direct or indirect lightning on the telecommunication line plant. Overvoltages or overcurrent not covered by this European Standard are – short-term induction of alternating voltages from electric power systems (including electrified railway), – earth potential rise due to power faults or load switching, – direct contacts between telecommunication lines and low voltage power lines. This European Standard is intended for use by network (public/private) operators and the equipment manufacturers. This European Standard applies to equipment having telecommunication port(s) connected to external conductors, i.e. conductor located outside the customer’s building. The tests are type tests and, although they are applicable to a complete system, it is recognised that they may be applied to individual items of equipment during development and design work.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and tests for isolating spark gaps (ISG) for lightning protection systems. ISG's can be used to indirectly bond a lightning protection system to other nearby metalwork where a direct bond is not permissible for functional reasons. Typical applications include the connection to - earth termination systems of power installations, - earth termination systems of telecommunication systems, - rail earth electrode of AC and DC railways, - measuring earth electrodes for laboratories, - installations with cathodic protection and stray current systems, - service entry masts for low- voltage overhead cables, - bypassing insulated flanges and insulated couplings of pipelines.

Applicable to risk assessment for a structure or for a service due to lightning flashes to earth. Its purpose is to provide a procedure for the evaluation of such a risk. Once an upper tolerable limit for the risk has been selected, this procedure allows the selection of appropriate protection measures to be adopted to reduce the risk to or below the tolerable limit. Informative annex with simplified software for risk assessment for structures.

Provides information for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance and testing of a LEMP protection measures system (LPMS) for electrical and electronic systems within a structure, able to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse. This standard does not cover protection against electromagnetic interference due to lightning, which may cause malfunctioning of electronic systems. However, the information reported in Annex A can also be used to evaluate such disturbances. Protection measures against electromagnetic interference are covered in IEC 60364-4-44 and in the IEC 61000 series [1] . This standard provides guidelines for cooperation between the designer of the electrical and electronic system, and the designer of the protection measures, in an attempt to achieve optimum protection effectiveness. This standard does not deal with detailed design of the electrical and electronic systems themselves.
