ISO/TC 36/WG 3 - Audio technology

This document specifies digital code for mats and modulation methods for motion-picture film to be used for timing, control, editing and synchronization purposes. This document also specifies the relationship of the codes to the motion picture frame. Two types of code are described in this document. The first type, Type C, is a continuous code which is very similar to the continuous code specified in IEC 60461. This type of code can be used in situations where the film is moving continuously at the time of both recording and reproduction. The second type of code, Type 8, is a non-continuous, block-type code, composed of blocks of data, each complete in itself, with gaps between the blocks. It is designed so that the code can be recorded and played back on equipment with intermittent film motion but still be decoded with the same type of electronic equipment used to read the Type C or continuous time code.

ISO 7739:2016 specifies the lateral positions and width dimensions of two-track variable area sound records on 16 mm motion-picture prints. It also specifies the area scanned by the sound reproducer.

ISO 21727:2016 specifies a method of measurement of short duration motion-picture sound that allows assessment of the subjective loudness and annoyance of the sound recording when replayed at the recommended replay level in rooms aligned with the characteristics of ISO 2969. The specified method of measurement assesses the entire duration of the sound recording, typically commercials and trailers that do not exceed 3 min in length, with suitable channel summation, frequency weighting and time integration. It does not specify a maximum recommended level for such material and is solely aimed at describing a measurement method. NOTE Typical recording and replay levels are discussed in Annex A.

ISO 12612:2016 specifies certain parameters and technical characteristics of post-production motion-picture materials used in the international exchange of 35 mm and 70 mm picture and sound elements. ISO 12612:2016 further specifies a method for the evaluation of picture-image quality based on a standardized test image contained in the post-production picture elements.

ISO 2969:2015 specifies the measurement methods and characteristic electroacoustic frequency response of the B-chain of motion-picture dubbing theatres (mixing rooms), screening rooms, and indoor theatres whose room volume exceeds 125 m3 (4,414 ft3). It is intended to assist in standardization of monitoring and reproduction of motion-picture sound in such rooms. The goal is to have constant perceived loudness and frequency response from installation to installation, and from position-to-position within an installation. This International Standard does not cover that part of the motion-picture sound system extending from the transducer to the input source audio selector.

ISO 7832:2014 specifies a method of measuring and calibrating the photoelectric output factor of single channel analogue photographic-type audio-level test films in all gauges, using a calibrating sound reproducer. It is applicable to both variable area- and variable density-type sound records with a silver audio track. It also specifies the performance of a calibrating audio reproducer.

ISO 71:2014 specifies the positions and width dimensions of 16 mm negative monophonic photographic sound record on 16 mm, 35/16 mm, and 35/32 mm motion picture film intended for printing of 16 mm release prints.

ISO 12611:2004 specifies head-leader tones for use on interchanged motion-picture analogue audio masters, from two track (on three-track format records) through six track.

1.1 This International Standard specifies basic technical characteristics for the international exchange of analogue photographic sound test films intended for checking, adjusting and measuring motion-picture projector sound systems and sound reproducing channels of motion-picture installations for monophonic or stereophonic reproduction. 1.2 This International Standard specifies types and technical characteristics of test films made on 35 mm and 16 mm motion-picture films. 1.3 This International Standard includes test films intended for the checking, adjusting and measuring of a) focusing and azimuth of the scanning beam, b) scanning beam width and its position relative to the reference edge of the film, c) uniformity of the scanning beam illumination, d) level output balance of several motion-picture projectors, e) frequency response of the sound reproduction channel, and f) non-uniformity of film travel.

This International Standard recommends storage conditions for stabilization and preservation of magnetic audio recordings for motion-picture and television production. It recommends the desirable storage conditions for magnetic audio recordings, as they may remain in library or vault storage between periods of intermittent reproduction or duplication. It describes the care and handling of magnetic media intended to be introduced into, or removed from, storage.

Specifies basic technical characteristics for magnetic sound test films used for checking, adjusting and measuring 70 mm motion-picture projector sound systems and sound reproduction channels of motion-picture installations. Includes specifications for test films intended for checking, adjusting and measuring of azimuth of the magnetic head gaps; output level balance of several motion-picture projectors or systems and interchannel balance on each projector or system; frequency response of the sound reproduction channels and non-uniformity in velocity of film travel.

Specifies the recorded characteristic, i.e. the recorded relative magnetic flux level (in dB) as a function of frequency (in Hz), of audio records on 70 mm motion-picture release prints with magnetic striping when reproduced at the nominal speed of 24 frames per second.

Specifies location and width of magnetic striping, location and width of gaps of magnetic heads, film projection speed, and longitudinal picture-sound displacement.

Specifies positions and dimensions, sound records, picture-sound displacement, and track usage.

Specifies measurement methods and maximum ratings for indoor background sound pressure levels. Applies to noise emitted by heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems, intrusive noise from the projector(s) and noise emitted by any other mechanical or electrical equipment, but not to intrusive noise from outside, such as traffic noise. It is intended for application when the background noise is essentially a steady-state sound, without strong time-varying components.

This International Standard specifies the lateral positions and width dimensions of the recording heads for two magnetic Sound records and a control track on 17,5 mm Single perforated magnetic recording film. lt also specifies the reproducing velocity of the film travel.

This International Standard specifies a preferred method and an alternative method for measuring the signal-to-noise ratio of 8 mm type S, 16 mm and 35 mm variable-area photographic Sound records.

Specified are the locations and widths of magnetic stripes and gaps of magnetic recording and reproducing heads for six-track magnetic sound records on 70 mm release prints on safety film. In special motion-picture films the arrangement of the stripes may deviate from that given here to achieve certain sound effects.

This International Standard specifies the recorded characteristic for magnetic Sound records on 35 mm motion-picture film excluding striped release prints when used at the nominal Speed of 24 frames (45,6 cm or 18 in) per second or 25 frames (47,5 cm or 18.7 in) per second. NOTE - This International Standard and relevant portions of Recommendation No. 265-2 of the CCIR have substantially the same technical content.

This International Standard specifies the A-chain electrical frequency response characteristic for photographic Sound reproduction in motion-picture control rooms and indoor theatres. lt is intended, in conjunction with ISO 2969, to assist in the standardization of recording monitor and reproduction characteristics of motion-picture Sound dubbing theatres, review rooms and indoor theatres. This International Standard covers that part of the motion-picture Sound System from the transducer to the input terminals of the main fader.

This International Standard specifies the location and dimen­sions of head gaps for recording three-, four-, or six-track magnetic sound records on 35 mm (perforated in accordance with ISO 491), and one single-track record on 17,5 mm motion­picture film. It also specifies the assignment of records to the various tracks on the magnetic coating on the film in relation to the direction of film travel.

This International Standard specifies the recorded characteristic for magnetic sound records on 16 mm full-coat perforated magnetic film when used at the nominal speed of 24 frames [18,3 cm (7.2 in)] per second, or 25 frames [19,05 cm (7.5 in)1 per second.

This International Standard specifies the Position and maximum width dimensions of original variable area and variable density monophonic 35 mm negative photographic Sound records on 35 mm motion-picture film.

Also specifies the relationship of the codes to the motion-picture frame. Two types of code are described: type C (a continuous code very similar to the continuous code specified in IEC 461) for film moving continuously at the time of both recording and reproduction, and type B (a non-continuous, block-type code, composed of blocks of data with gaps between the blocks) for intermittent film motion.

Describes a method of measuring and calibrating the photoelectric output factor of single-channel photographic-type audio-level test films in all gauges by means of a calibrating sound reproducer. The specifications apply to both vaiable-area and variable-density sound records with a silver audio track. Calibrated audio-level test films are used for the precise measurement of the output level of photographic sound reproducers and the photoelectric output factor of different sound records. In addition, the performance of a calibrating audio reproducer is described.

Specified are characteristics of the B-chain response of motion-picture studio dubbing theatres, review rooms and indoor theatres. They are intended to assist in the standardization of recording monitor and reproduction characteristics of the motion-picture sound in rooms with volumes of at least 150 m3. Not included are conditions where the recorded sound is intended for reproduction in domestic surroundings, i. e. radio and television broadcasting, tape and disk.
