Overview
ASTM F1019M-00(2023): Standard Specification for Steel Deck Gear Stowage Box (Metric) provides internationally recognized guidelines for the design, material selection, and manufacturing of steel deck gear stowage boxes, specifically for marine and shipboard applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures the safety, quality, and compatibility of stowage boxes used for general deck gear-excluding boxes for life preservers or pyrotechnic items. The specification establishes requirements that help prevent hazards to personnel and ensure the longevity and reliability of equipment in challenging marine environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to the design, materials, and manufacturing methods for steel deck gear stowage boxes.
- Excludes use for storing life preservers or pyrotechnics.
- Uses SI (metric) units as standard measurements.
Material Requirements
- Steel must comply with ASTM A36/A36M for carbon structural steel.
- Fasteners such as nuts, bolts, and washers are required to be corrosion-resistant.
- All materials and packaging must be free of hazardous substances like asbestos and cadmium.
Design and Manufacture
- Two types of stowage boxes:
- Type I: Must conform to all standard dimensions as illustrated in reference figures.
- Type II: Flexible dimensions based on customer requirements but must follow material and quality standards.
- Welding must adhere to ABS Rules or AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code.
- Strict limitations on dimensions and tolerances, with a maximum deviation of 1.5 mm.
- Two types of stowage boxes:
Workmanship and Finish
- Assemblies must be free of weld spatter, slag, splinters, sharp edges, and any projection hazardous to personnel.
- After assembly, stowage boxes must be cleaned to a commercial finish as per SSPC-SP6.
- Non-grating and non-cover surfaces are to be coated with a commercial quality anticorrosive primer that is lead-free and chromate-free.
- Gratings and covers must be hot-dip galvanized according to ASTM A123/A123M standards.
Applications
Marine and Shipboard Use
- Commonly used on commercial vessels, naval ships, and offshore platforms to safely store deck gear such as ropes, tools, and equipment.
- Provides robust, corrosion-resistant storage to withstand harsh marine conditions.
- Improves deck safety by ensuring secure and hazard-free storage options.
Shipbuilding and Deck Outfitting
- Essential for shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, and contractors involved in vessel outfitting.
- Supports compliance with regulatory and buyer specifications for marine safety equipment.
Custom Marine Storage Solutions
- Type II boxes allow for customized sizing to meet unique shipboard or offshore platform requirements, while maintaining quality and safety standards.
