Overview

EN 516:2006 - Prefabricated accessories for roofing: Installations for roof access - Walkways, treads and steps (CEN) defines requirements for permanently fixed roof-access products on pitched roofs. It covers essential dimensions, materials, load-bearing capacity and testing extents for walkways, treads and steps that are fixed to the load‑bearing roof construction for inspection, maintenance and repair. The standard does not apply to permanently fixed ladders.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & product types
    • Applies to prefabricated walkways, treads and steps permanently fixed to pitched roof load-bearing construction.
    • Walkways classified as Type A/B/C by platform width; treads and steps have minimum size requirements.
  • Materials & durability
    • Products shall be metal or equivalent and corrosion resistant - at least equivalent to hot‑dip galvanizing per EN ISO 1461.
    • Parts under the roof covering may be timber if protected.
  • Dimensions & geometry
    • Walkway platform widths: Type A 250 mm, Type B 350 mm, Type C 430 mm; platform length ≥ 500 mm.
    • Treads: width ≥ 250 mm, length ≥ 400 mm. Steps: min 130 × 130 mm with turn‑ups/side battens ≥ 20 mm and grip/handle.
    • After installation, platform inclinations across width and length ≤ 3° from horizontal.
  • Classes & strength
    • Class 1: not to be used as anchor points for fall‑arrest equipment.
    • Class 2: may be used as anchorage points; additional anchorage strength requirements apply.
    • Static design load: single vertical load P ≥ 1.5 kN; deflection ≤ span/100 and ≤ 15 mm. Treads/steps vertical deviation ≤ 9 mm.
    • Anchorage (Class 2) test load: P1 ≥ 10 kN for a single anchorage point. Fatigue strength testing required per Clause 8.2.
  • Testing & conformity
    • Static tests on three specimens; specified test positions (lowest/steepest roof slopes and centre).
    • Load-distributing plate 100 × 100 mm; test load increased to 2.6 kN for one minute in step test.
    • Addresses factory production control, initial type testing and CE marking requirements (Annex ZA - Construction Products Directive).
  • Fire performance
    • Reaction to fire: Class A1 (deemed without testing); external fire performance considered satisfied.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses:
    • Design and specification of permanent roof access systems for pitched roofs.
