Gas-fired central heating boilers - Specific requirements for condensing boilers with a nominal heat input greater than 70 kW but not exceeding 1000 kW

This document applies to gas-fired central heating boilers, which are declared by the manufacturer to be "condensing boilers":
¾   of types C (excluding appliances without a fan) and B,
¾   using one or more gases corresponding to the three gas families, and
¾   for which the nominal heat input is greater than 70 kW but not exceeding 1 000 kW. This document only covers type testing.
This document completes or modifies the standards EN 656, EN 13836, and prEN 15420 hereafter called "boiler standards". It specifies supplementary requirements for condensing boilers.

Dieses Dokument gilt für Heizkessel für gasförmige Brennstoffe, die vom Hersteller zu Brennwertheiz-kesseln erklärt worden sind:
-   Heizkessel der Bauart C (ausschließlich Geräte mit einem Gebläse) und B;
-   Heizkessel für eine Gasart oder für mehrere Gasarten, entsprechend den drei Gasfamilien, und
-   Heizkessel, bei denen die Nennwärmebelastung größer als 70 kW aber kleiner oder gleich 1 000 kW ist. Dieses Dokument gilt nur für die Typprüfung.
Dieses Dokument vervollständigt oder ändert die Normen EN 656, EN 13836 und prEN 15420, die im Folgenden Kesselnormen genannt werden. Es nennt zusätzliche Anforderungen für Brennwertheizkessel.

Le présent document s’applique aux chaudières de chauffage central utilisant les combustibles gazeux qui sont désignées par le fabricant comme «chaudières à condensation» :
-   des types C (excepté les appareils sans ventilateur) et B ;
-   utilisant un ou plusieurs gaz correspondant aux trois familles de gaz ; et
-   dont le débit calorifique nominal est supérieur à 70 kW mais inférieur ou égal à 1 000 kW. Ce document couvre uniquement les essais de type.
Le présent document complète ou modifie les normes EN 656,pr EN 13836 et le WI 0100031 prEN 15420, ci-après désignées «normes chaudières». Il définit les exigences supplémentaires visant les chaudières à condensation.

Scope This document applies to gas-fired central heating boilers, which are declared by the manufacturer to be "condensing boilers":  of types C (excluding appliances without a fan) and B,
 using one or more gases corresponding to the three gas families, and
 for which the nominal heat input is greater than 70 kW but not exceeding 1 000 kW. This document only covers type testing. This document completes or modifies the standards EN 656, EN 13836, and prEN 15420 hereafter called "boiler standards". It specifies supplementary requirements for condensing boilers. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 656:1999, EN 13836:2006 and the following apply. 3.1 condensate liquid formed from the combustion products during the condensation process 4 Classification of boilers 4.1 Gases and categories Gases and categories are in accordance with those given in the "boiler standards" 4.2 Classification according to the mode of evacuation of the combustion products The classifications according to the mode of evacuation of combustion products are in accordance with those given in the "boiler standards". The internal diameter of the outside connection of the condensate discharge system shall be at least 13 mm.
The disposal system, forming part of the boiler or supplied with the boiler, shall be such that:  it can be easily inspected and cleaned in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions;
 it cannot transmit combustion products into the room where the boiler is installed; this requirement is satisfied if the disposal system incorporates a water trap;  a water trap has a seal of at least 25 mm at the maximum pressure in the combustion chamber at the maximum flue length specified by the manufacturer. Surfaces in contact with condensate (except purpose provided drains, water traps and siphons) shall be designed to prevent condensate retention. 5.3 Chemical composition of the condensate The manufacturer shall communicate the probable chemical composition of the condensate (pH, heavy metals, etc.) if the composition is required by national regulations. 5.4 Control of the combustion products temperature

f)   which are intended to be installed inside a building or in a partially protected place;
g)   which are intended to produce also hot water either by the instantaneous or storage principle, as a single unit;
h)   which are designed for either sealed water systems or for open water systems.
NOTE 2   This document provides requirements for boilers with known constructions. For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this document, the risk associated with this alternative construction needs to be assessed.
An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment, is given in Clause 11.
This document does not cover all the requirements for:
aa)   appliances that are intended to be connected to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance (see Annex AB);

ad)   appliances of the types A, B14, B¬2, B3, B4, B5 and C;

NOTE   Negative pressure relative to the pressure in the flue system can for example be caused by mechanical or thermal ventilation in airtight buildings.

m) which are fully premixed appliances equipped with a Pneumatic Gas Air Ratio controller (PGAR) that are intended to be connected to gas grids for natural gases of the second family where up to 20% hydrogen volume is added to the natural gas (H2NG-Y20), where the quality of the distributed gas without adding the hydrogen is not likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance.
Replace ab) and ak) and al) by the following:

This European Standard specifies the common requirements and test methods, as well as the classification, marking and energy labelling of gas-fired central heating boilers that are fitted with atmospheric burners, fan assisted atmospheric burners or fully premixed burners, and are hereafter referred to as “boilers”.
This European Standard is to be used in conjunction with the specific Parts 2 (Part 2-1 and following ones).
This European Standard applies to boilers of types B and C.
NOTE For further background information on appliance types see CEN/TR 1749:2014 [1].
a) that use one or more combustible gases of the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437;
b) where the temperature of the water is below or above 105 °C during normal operation;
c) where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar;

e) which are declared in the instructions for installation to be either a "condensing" boiler or a "low temperature boiler" or a "standard boiler" or an "other boiler". If no declaration is given the boiler is to be considered both a "standard boiler" and an "other boiler";
NOTE The Ecodesign Directive defines "other boilers", "low temperature boilers" and "condensing boilers". The Boiler Efficiency Directive defines "standard boilers", "low temperature boilers" and "condensing boilers". Depending on the legislation applied, a boiler can be both "a standard boiler" and an "other boiler"."
f) which are intended to be installed inside a building or in a partially protected place;
g) which are intended to produce also hot water either by the instantaneous or storage principle as a single unit.
This European Standard applies to boilers designed for sealed water systems or for open water systems.
NOTE This general standard and the specific standards (see Part 2) provide requirements for boilers with known constructions. For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this standard or a specific standard, the risk associated with this alternative construction will need to be assessed.
An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment, is given in Clause 11.
This European Standard is not intended to cover appliances intended for connection to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance (see Annex EE).

This document specifies the requirements and tests methods concerning the construction, safety, fitness for purpose, and rational use of energy, as well as the classification and marking of hybrid units.
A hybrid unit is composed of:
-   a gas boiler as a heat generator which is able to supply the heat demand in all operating conditions;
-   an electrical air-to-water heat pump, as a heat generator, which does not have to meet the heat demand in all operating conditions;
-   a control unit (see definition 3.1.10).
A hybrid unit can include the facility to produce hot water, either by the instantaneous or storage principle, the whole being marketed as a single unit.
A gas boiler as part of a hybrid unit covered by this document is a gas-fired central heating boiler from the types C1 up to C9 and the types B2, B3 and B5, according to the classification in EN 1749:2020:
a)   that have a nominal heat input (on the basis of gross calorific value) not exceeding 400 kW;
b)   that use one or more combustible gases of the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437:2021;
c)   where the temperature of the heat transfer fluid does not exceed 105 °C during normal operation;
d)   where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar;
e)   which are classified as a gas-fired central heating boiler;
f)   which are intended to be installed either indoors or outdoors in a partially protected place;
g)   which are designed for either sealed water systems or for open water systems.
This document provides requirements for boilers with known constructions.
NOTE 1   For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this document, the risk associated with this alternative construction needs to be assessed.
NOTE 2   An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment and which covers the essential requirements of the Gas Appliance Regulation UE/426/2016, is given in Clause 11.

These boilers are formed of the assembly of a boiler body and a forced draught gas burner achieved on the production site of the manufacturer, the whole being designed and marketed as a complete boiler. The boiler body shall be in accordance with EN 303-1. The construction of the forced draught gas burner shall be in accordance with EN 676.

This European Standard specifies the requirements and test methods for the construction, the safety and the rational energy usage of an assembly made up of a boiler body complying with EN 303- 11) and a forced draught gas burner complying with EN 676, using combustible gases, hereafter referred to as a "boiler".  This European Standard applies to a boiler:  - with a nominal output not exceeding 1 000 kW.  This European Standard does not contain all the necessary requirements for:  - assemblies designed as units;  - condensing boilers and low temperature boilers;  - boilers intended to be installed in the open;  - boilers permanently fitted with more than one flue outlet;  - boilers fitted with a draught diverter;  -  boilers intended to be connected to a common flue having mechanical    extraction.  This European Standard does not apply to living-space dedicated boilers   If the boiler body has already been tested with a liquid fuel burner, in accordance with EN 303-1, EN 303-2 and EN 304, only the tests described in annex G need to be performed.  In the case of a range of boilers, see annex F.  This European Standard does not contain all the necessary requirements for low temperature boilers. This European Standard specifies the common requirements and test methods concerning, in particular the construction, safety, fitness for purpose, and rational use of energy, as well as the classification, marking and energy labelling of gas-fired central heating boilers that are fitted with atmospheric burners, fan assisted atmospheric burners or fully premixed burners, and are hereafter referred to as “boilers”.
This European Standard is to be used in conjunction with the specific Parts 2 (Part 2-1 and following ones).
This European Standard applies to boilers of types B and C, according to CEN/TR 1749:2014:
a)   that use one or more combustible gases of the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437;
b)   where the temperature of the heat transfer fluid does not exceed 105 °C during normal operation;
c)   where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar;
d)   which can give rise to condensation under certain circumstances;
e)   which are declared in the installation instructions to be either a “condensing” boiler or a "low temperature boiler" or a “standard boiler”. If no declaration is given the boiler is to be considered a “standard boiler”
f)   which are intended to be installed inside a building or in a partially protected place;
g)   which are intended to produce hot water either by the instantaneous or storage principle, the whole being marketed as a single unit.
This European Standard applies to boilers designed for sealed water systems or for open water systems.
This general standard and the specific standards (see Part 2) provide requirements for boilers with known constructions. For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this standard or a specific standard, the risk associated with this alternative construction will need to be assessed.
An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment, is given in Clause 11.
This European Standard is not intended to cover appliances intended for connection to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance.
