Overview
EN 14206:2025 specifies safety, dimensional and test requirements for gangways used as walkways between inland passenger vessels and the shore. Prepared by CEN/TC 15 and approved in 2025, the standard updates and supersedes the 2003 edition and aligns with related European regulations for inland navigation. It focuses on practical aspects that affect design, manufacture, inspection and in-service testing of gangways.
Keywords: EN 14206:2025, gangways, inland navigation vessels, requirements, tests, railings, accessibility, strength, marking, certification.
Key Topics
Scope and references: Applies to gangways for passenger vessels in inland navigation and references EN 526, EN 711:2024 (railings) and ISO 2768-1 (general tolerances).
Dimensions and accessibility:
- Minimum clear width: 600 mm for standard gangways; 900 mm for gangways suitable for wheelchairs.
- Fold-down ramps for wheelchair-capable gangways with a gradient not exceeding 1:4; ramps must fold onto the walkway and have central treads.
- Edges rounded to at least R = 1.5 mm; tolerances per ISO 2768-1 (class c).
Strength and load criteria:
- Design live load: minimum 5.0 kN/m² of walkway surface.
- Railing stanchions: withstand at least 1.0 kN in any direction without permanent deformation; deflection limit 50 mm for stanchions.
- Strength test: apply 1.25 × live load uniformly; deflection during test must not exceed 2% of gangway length and no permanent deflection after unloading.
Walkway features and construction:
- Anti-slip surface with treads (battens/bulbs) of (25 ± 5) mm height, spaced (450 ± 50) mm, painted in a luminous colour.
- Drainage provisions and luminous paint on dark side stringers.
- Railings 1 000 mm high, design types PF/PG/PZ per EN 711:2024; stanchions may be fixed, detachable or collapsible (detachable stanchions secured against unintentional removal).
Materials and durability: Components must resist oil, diesel, salt water, sunlight, galvanic effects and microorganisms and be durably protected or impregnated.
Mass and handling: The standard requires limits on gangway mass (formulas provided in the text) and provisions for lashing brackets, anti-slip lugs and replaceable wear parts (wheels, treads).
Applications
- Shipyards and OEMs designing gangways for inland passenger vessels.
- Fleet owners/operators seeking compliance, safety and durability in embarkation equipment.
- Inspectors and certifying bodies performing type and periodic testing, certification and marking checks.
Related Standards
- EN 526 - Gangways up to 8 m: requirements and types
- EN 711:2024 - Railings for decks and side decks
- ISO 2768-1 - General tolerances
EN 14206:2025 also mandates visual, material and periodical testing, issuance of a certificate of compliance and permanent nameplate marking listing dimensions, load capacity, manufacturer and serial data - essential items for regulatory compliance and safe operation.
