Overview

EN ISO 15029-1:1999 specifies the hollow-cone nozzle method for assessing the spray ignition characteristics of fire-resistant fluids used in petroleum and related products. This standard focuses on measuring spray flame persistence, which is the duration a flame continues to burn after ignition within a pressurized spray of fluid. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 28 (Petroleum products and lubricants), it forms Part 1 of a series dedicated to evaluating fire resistance of hydraulic fluids.

This test method is critical for ensuring safety in hydraulic fluid power systems where pressurized fire-resistant fluids are employed. It helps determine the fire resistance of fluids by measuring the flame persistence after ignition of an atomized spray, which is key in assessing fluid performance in hazardous environments.

Key Topics

  • Spray flame persistence: Measurement of the maximum time the fluid spray flame persists after removal of the igniting source, with precision to 0.1 seconds.
  • Hollow-cone nozzle method: Utilizes an 80° hollow-cone nozzle to atomize the fluid into a spray pattern for ignition testing.
  • Test conditions: Fluids are pressurized to 7 MPa and heated to specified temperatures (65 °C for water-based fluids, 85 °C for others) before spraying and ignition via oxyacetylene flame.
  • Apparatus: Includes a pressure vessel, heating device, nitrogen supply system, spray nozzle, blowpipe for ignition, and precise timing instruments.
  • Safety considerations: The standard warns of hazards related to materials and equipment, emphasizing user responsibility for compliance with safety and health practices.
  • Reporting: The highest measured spray flame persistence time is reported alongside any observations regarding sample clarity, sediment, or changes during heating.

Applications

EN ISO 15029-1:1999 applies primarily to:

  • Testing fire-resistant hydraulic fluids used in mobile and industrial hydraulic power systems where fire safety is critical.
  • Quality control and certification of petroleum-based and related fluids to ensure compliance with fire-resistance regulations.
  • Risk assessment in industries working with petroleum and chemical fluids where spray ignition may pose safety hazards.
  • Regulatory compliance: Supports standards like the Luxembourg Report 7th edition and helps manufacturers and users meet safety regulations governing fire-resistant fluids.

Key sectors benefiting from this standard include:

  • Hydraulic system manufacturers
  • Petroleum and lubricant producers
  • Industrial safety testing laboratories
  • Fire safety regulatory bodies

Related Standards

For comprehensive evaluation and classification of fire-resistant fluids in hydraulic systems, EN ISO 15029-1:1999 is part of a broader framework including:

  • ISO 15029-2: Spray test using stabilized flame heat release method, complementing Part 1 by assessing heat release during spray ignition.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 15029-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and
lubricants.
ISO 15029 consists of the following parts, under the general title Petroleum and related products — Determination
of spray ignition characteristics of fire-resistant fluids:
 Part 1: Spray flame persistence — Hollow-cone nozzle method
 Part 2: Spray test — Stabilized flame heat release method
 Part 3: Spray test — Large scale method
In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a liquid under pressure within an
enclosed circuit. One type of such a liquid is fire-resistant fluid. The following International Standards are suitable for
the classification, specification and guidance for use of such fluids:
ISO 6743-4:1999, Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) — Classification — Part 4: Family H
(Hydraulic systems).
ISO 7745:1989, Hydraulic fluid power — Fire-resistant (FR) fluids — Guidelines for use.
ISO 12922:1999, Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) — Family H (Hydraulic systems) —
Specifications for categories HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU.
The following International Standard may be useful for the assessment of the flame propagation and persistence of
a flame applied to the edge of a wick of non-flammable material immersed in fire-resistant fluid:
