Overview

EN IEC 63203-204-1:2021 - Wearable electronic devices and technologies - Part 204-1: Electronic textile - Test method for assessing washing durability of leisurewear and sportswear e-textile systems - defines a household washability test method for e-textile systems used in leisurewear and sportswear. The standard covers test preparation, washing and drying procedures, operational checks, and electrical resistance checks for products with electrically conductive components and sensors. It does not cover safety or heat-generation tests.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to e-textile systems integrated into leisurewear and sportswear (conductive textiles, sensors, interconnects). Excludes accessories (e.g., watches, glasses) and components outside the listed types.
  • Preconditioning: Specimens must be conditioned for at least 24 hours in a standard atmosphere per ISO 139 (20.0 ± 2.0 °C; 65.0 ± 5.0 % RH).
  • Functional checks: Verify operation before and after wash cycles according to the manufacturer user manual; report any malfunctions.
  • Detachable components: Remove detachable units (e.g., batteries, connection modules) prior to washing; embedded components remain on the garment.
  • Washing procedures: Follow ISO 6330 domestic washing and drying procedures. Default machine type is ISO 6330 Type A; default washing procedure is 4H; default drying is procedure A (line dry). Hand-washing conditions may be used where appropriate to reduce damage.
  • Electrical measurements: Measure linear electrical resistance and mark measurement areas following EN 16812:2016 so consistent measurements can be taken after each wash cycle. Resistance checks detect disconnections or degradations in conductive tracks (Annex A provides measurement study guidance).
  • Test reporting: Document test conditions, washing cycles, functional status before/after, resistance measurements and any observed failures.

Applications and users

Who uses this standard:

  • Manufacturers and designers of e-textile leisurewear and sportswear (product development, design validation)
  • Textile and electronics test laboratories performing washability and durability testing
  • Quality assurance and compliance teams verifying product claims for washable wearable electronics
  • R&D teams assessing conductive track durability and sensor reliability under repeated laundering
  • Retailers and buyers requiring objective wash durability evidence for smart garments

Practical benefits:

  • Provides a reproducible washability test to validate lifecycle performance of wearable electronics
  • Helps reduce field failures by identifying weak interconnects and design issues early
  • Supports product labeling and marketing claims about washability and durability

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
