FOREWORD
1)
The formal decisions or agreements of the I EC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the National
Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion
on the subjects dealt with.
2)
They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
3)
In order to promote international unification, the I EC expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt the text of
the I EC recommendation for their national rules insofar as national conditions will permit. Any divergence between the I EC
recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
4)
The I EC has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no responsibility when an
item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.

METHODS OF MEASUREMENT
FOR RADIO TRANSMITTERS
Part 12: Guideline for drawing up descriptive leaflets for transmitters
and transposers for sound and television broadcasting —
Characteristics to be specified
INTRODUCTION
As an interim measure and in order to ease the updating of references made to publications dealing
with methods of measurement with clauses of this standard, tables initially belonging to sections of
the different documents composing this standard are published in IEC Publication 244-12-2:
Specification sheets.
This standard is one of a series of parts of IEC Publication 244,
describing recommended methods of
measurement for assessing the performance of radio transmitters and shall be used in conjunction with
IEC Publication 244-12-2
regularly updated while dedicated pa rts of I EC Publication 244
are currently
being revised.
1. Scope
This standard applies to the manufacturer's desc
riptive leaflets providing information on
transmitters and transposers for sound and television broadcasting.
2. Object
The standard is intended:
— to lay down uniform methods of expressing
the
performance characteristics of transmitters and
transposers for sound and television broadcasting;
— to list the essential characteristics and technical information needed for the appraisal and
comparison of equipment;

to provide, where appropriate, cross references to standardized methods of measurement for the
performance characteristics listed.
Leaflets prepared in accordance with this standard need not form but may form part of
instruction manuals supplied with the equipment.
3. General notes on the format of the leaflet
Two categories of characteristics are specified as follows:
— general characteristics applicable to all categories of transmitters and transposers;

performance characteristics specific to a particular type of equipment, e.g. a television trans-
mitter or a transposer for frequency-modulated sound broadcasting.
The general characteristics cover electrical and other characteristics which can have an effect on
the performance of the equipment; they shall include the following technical information:
a) functional descri
ption of the various items of equipment including block diagrams, where
appropriate;
Oc

layout of the equipment and constructional details, including dimensions and weights, of the
b)
individual items and ancillary equipment required for normal operation;
figures about cooling and means and quality of coolant;
c)
characteristics affecting the environment, e.g. heat dissipation in the transmitter room and
d)
acoustic noise;
type designation of the equipment and individual items, where applicable;
e)
number and type designation of thermionic tubes used in power stages.
J
Some characteristics and/or technical information may not be appropriate to all types of
equipment, e.g. low power transmitters.
Additional characteristics, other than those mentioned in this standard, may be included in a
particular leaflet.
As far as practicable, the definitions given in this standard are in accordance with those of the
s of I EC Publication 244. It should be noted, however, that the definitions are intended
various part
for the guidance of authors and should not in general appear in the actual leaflets.
SECTION ONE — GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS APPLICABLE
TO ALL CATEGORIES OF TRANSMITTERS AND TRANSPOSERS
4. Introduction
The general characteristics described in this section are listed in Table I of I EC Publica-
tion 244-12-2.
Where appropriate, reference is made in Table I to the standardized methods of measurement
and test signals described in other I EC publications.
5. Characteristics
5.1 Transmission system
The transmission system(s) the transmitter or transposer is capable of handling shall be stated
and be designated in accordance with the latest issue of the relevant CCIR Recommendation or
Report, e.g.:
— 624;
for television: CCIR Repo rt
— for FM sound broadcasting: CCIR Recommendation 450;
— for AM sound broadcasting: CCIR Repo rt 458.
5.2 Frequency range
The frequency range refers to the frequency band (or bands) in which the transmitter or
transposer is capable of operating.
The following details shall be specified:
— the lower and upper limits of the frequency band (or bands), expressed in kHz or MHz;
— information on any frequency dependent components or sub-assemblies in the equipment that
shall be replaced or modified to cover the above specified frequency range;
rive may be used
— the way in which the carrier frequency is generated and whether an external d
instead;

for transposers, the frequency range for reception and for transmission, together with any input

and output frequency combinations which shall be avoided;
— if applicable, the switching time (min. and max.) for a frequency change for transmitters which
rt wave
operate in different bands or in different frequencies within a band (see sho
transmitters).
Carrier frequency stability
5.3
er frequency stability shall be specified as the difference, expressed in Hz between the

highest and the lowest value of carrier frequency during the following periods of time:
1 h for short-term stability, and

— six months for long-term stability.
riers shall be given. For a
For a television transmitter, the stability of both sound and vision car
transposer, the frequency transposition stability shall be given.
5.4 Intermediate frequencies
If the modulation or conversion process is carried out at intermediate frequencies, the inter-
mediate frequency or frequencies shall be stated.
5.5 Rated output power (rated output power range)
ge) is the power (or the range of the power) that
The rated output power (or rated output power r an
the transmitter or transposer shall deliver at its output under specified conditions of operation.
The rated output power, expressed in W or kW, shall be stated as follows:
— for television transmitters and transposers: the peak envelope power of the vision signal;
er;
— for FM sound transmitters and transposers: the power of the unmodulated car ri
rier;
— for double-sideband AM sound transmitters: the power of the unmodulated car
— for single-sideband AM sound transmitters: the peak envelope power.
In this last case, the degree of carrier reduction, expressed in dB relative to peak envelope power,
shall also be specified.
5.6 Nominal load impedance
The nominal load impedance, i.e. the nominal value of the radio-frequency impedance into
which the transmitter or transposer shall deliver its rated output power, shall be specified.
5.7 Load impedance mismatch
The voltage standing wave ratio presented by the radio-frequency load impedance mismatch
concerns both:
the maximum V.S.W.R. up to which the transmitter or transposer is capable of operating within
a)
the performance specifications;
b) the maximum V.S.W.R. for which the transmitter or transposer is capable of operating without
damage or without the intervention of a protective device.
Both values shall be specified.
