Lead acid traction batteries - Part 1: General requirements and methods of tests

This part of EN 60254 is applicable to lead acid traction batteries used as power sources for electric propulsion. The tests defined are relevant to all traction battery applications which include road vehicles, locomotives, industrial trucks and mechanical handling equipments. Tests which may be used specifically to test batteries developed for use in vehicles such as light passenger vehicles, motor cycles, light commercial vehicles, etc. may be found in alternative standards e.g. EN 61982-2. The object of this standard is to specify certain essential characteristics of traction batteries or cells, together with the relevant test methods of those characteristics.

La présente partie de la EN 60254 est applicable aux batteries d'accumulateurs de traction au plomb utilisées comme source d'énergie pour la propulsion électrique. Les essais définis sont applicables à toutes les batteries d'accumulateurs de traction pour applications dans les véhicules routiers, les locomotives, les engins industriels et les chariots de manutention. Des essais qui peuvent être utilisés pour tester de manière spécifique des batteries d'accumulateurs développées pour l'utilisation dans des véhicules tels que les véhicules électriques légers destinés au transport des passagers, les cycles à moteurs, les véhicules commerciaux légers, etc. peuvent être spécifiés dans d'autres normes tel que la EN 61982-2. La présente norme a pour objet de spécifier certaines caractéristiques essentielles des batteries d'accumulateurs de traction ou des éléments, ainsi que les méthodes d'essais permettant de contrôler ces caractéristiques.

Foreword
The text of document 21/619/FDIS, future edition 4 of IEC 60254-1, prepared by IEC TC 21,
Secondary cells and batteries, was submitted to the IEC-CENELEC parallel vote and was approved by
CENELEC as EN 60254-1 on 2005-05-01.
This European Standard supersedes EN 60254-1:1997.
The principal change is the removal of the original Clause 6 dealing with "Testing procedures for light
road vehicle traction batteries", as this is now covered by EN 61982-2. The "high rate discharge test"
has been changed from 0,5 h to 1 h and the temperature coefficient of resistance for 1 h discharge
included. The opportunity has also been taken to introduce relatively minor revisions where these are
now more appropriate due to developments.
The following dates were fixed:
– latest date by which the EN has to be implemented
at national level by publication of an identical
national standard or by endorsement (dop) 2006-02-01
– latest date by which the national standards conflicting
with the EN have to be withdrawn (dow) 2008-05-01
Annex ZA has been added by CENELEC.
