Overview
EN 61534-1:2011/A2:2021 is the latest amendment to the European Standard governing powertrack systems, specifically Part 1: General Requirements. Published by CLC in 2021 and aligned with IEC 61534-1:2011/A2:2020, this standard addresses the essential design, safety, testing, and performance specifications for powertrack systems used in electrical installations.
Powertrack systems are modular power distribution units widely applied in commercial, industrial, and residential environments to provide flexible, reliable electrical connection pathways. This amendment ensures enhanced safety, durability, and compliance with European directives through updated testing methods, marking requirements, and construction criteria.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to powertrack systems with a focus on safety, performance reliability, and prevention of hazards to users and surroundings during normal operation.Design and Construction Requirements
Systems must be designed so reliable performance is ensured without unreasonable hazard to users, domestic animals, or installations. Systems supplying multiple circuits must prevent incorrect tap-off unit connections.Marking and Documentation
Markings must be durable and resistant to wear and chemical exposure, tested using specific rubbing methods with liquids like water and n-hexane solvent. Markings cannot be on removable components to maintain legibility.Testing Procedures
The amendment refines environmental, fire hazard, mechanical, and corrosion test requirements including:- Salt mist and cyclic environmental testing
- Flame spread and fire hazard assessment focusing on tap-off outlets
- Mechanical durability tests like hammer impact and glow-wire flammability
- Corrosion resistance for dry, non-aggressive environments with specific cleaning and inspection protocols
- IP code compliance for ingress protection assessment according to IEC 60529
Routine Testing
Additional streamlined routine tests are required for systems already compliant with previous editions, focusing on marking durability, construction integrity for multi-circuit systems, and flame resistance.
Applications
EN 61534-1:2011/A2:2021 serves as a baseline for manufacturers, installers, and safety authorities involved in:
Electrical Power Distribution
Ensuring safe and compliant powertrack installations in commercial buildings, offices, factories, and public spaces.Cable Management Systems
Assisting manufacturers in designing cable carrier and track systems that meet rigorous safety and durability standards.Safety Certification and Compliance
Providing testing protocols and marking guidelines critical for certification of powertrack devices within the EU and CENELEC member countries.Fire Safety Engineering
Improving flame spread testing and material selection criteria to reduce fire hazards related to powertrack components.
Related Standards
EN 61534-1:2011/A2:2021 references multiple international standards crucial for comprehensive evaluation of powertrack systems, including:
- IEC 60529 - Degrees of protection (IP Code)
- IEC 60695-2-11, 10-2, 11-2 - Fire hazard testing methodologies (Glow-wire, Ball pressure, Flame tests)
- IEC 60068-2-52, 2-75 - Environmental testing for salt mist and hammer effects
- IEC 60112 - Tracking resistance of insulating materials
- IEC 60269-1 - Low-voltage fuse requirements
- IEC 60884-1 - General requirements for plugs and socket outlets
- ISO 2081 - Zinc electroplated coatings for corrosion resistance
- ISO 4628-3 - Evaluation of rusting and degradation of coatings
These standards collectively support the integrity, safety, and performance of powertrack systems under various operational and environmental conditions.
By adhering to EN 61534-1:2011/A2:2021, industry stakeholders ensure powertrack systems meet rigorous European safety and functional benchmarks, enabling safer electrical infrastructure with verified durability and compliance, supporting sustainable and risk-mitigated power distribution solutions.
