Overview
EN 62018:2003 is a European Standard developed by CLC that specifies measurement methods for power consumption of information technology equipment (ITE). This standard establishes test procedures to accurately measure energy use under different operational modes to support effective energy management in IT products. The scope of the standard includes the types of equipment covered by EN 60950-1, ensuring consistent evaluation across a broad range of devices. Approved by CENELEC, EN 62018:2003 targets manufacturers, testers, and energy auditors aiming to optimize device power efficiency and verify compliance with energy performance goals.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Defines methods for measuring power consumption of ITE during full operation and energy-saving modes to assist in reducing overall energy use.
- Test Equipment Requirements: Specifies the use of calibrated true RMS voltmeters and wattmeters with ±1% accuracy, capable of handling variable waveforms and appropriate bandwidths.
- Test Environment Conditions: Outlines ambient temperature conditions (typically 23 °C ± 5 °C) and power supply characteristics such as rated frequency, voltage ranges, and harmonic distortion limits.
- Measurement Procedures: Details how to measure power in full-on mode under normal load and in various energy-saving modes after stabilization, ensuring consistent and repeatable results.
- Recording Test Results: Lists mandatory data collection criteria, including equipment model, configuration, ambient conditions, supply voltage and frequency, and power consumption values for all tested modes.
Applications
EN 62018:2003 serves multiple practical purposes in the IT industry by:
- Supporting Energy Management Programs: Enables manufacturers to design and verify power-saving features in devices without compromising functionality.
- Assisting Regulatory Compliance: Provides a standardized procedure to demonstrate conformance with national or regional energy efficiency directives.
- Empowering Energy Audits: Helps energy auditors and testing labs to conduct repeatable power consumption measurements for benchmarking or product certification.
- Guiding Product Development: Offers engineers a clear methodology to identify power usage profiles across operational states, facilitating targeted improvements.
- Enabling Consumer Transparency: Supplies verified power consumption data that can inform environmentally conscious purchasing decisions.
Related Standards
- EN 60950-1 (Safety of Information Technology Equipment): Defines general safety requirements and product categories covered by EN 62018 testing methods.
- IEC 62018:2003: The international equivalent of this European Standard, offering global alignment on power measurement practices.
- Relevant CENELEC and IEC standards: Provide harmonized frameworks supporting electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental considerations in electronic equipment.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Guide the preparation and drafting of standards like EN 62018 ensuring consistency and clarity.
With the increasing focus on sustainable IT solutions, EN 62018:2003 offers a crucial framework to accurately measure and manage power consumption in information technology equipment. Adopting these standardized test methods enables stakeholders to improve energy efficiency, meet regulatory requirements, and contribute to global energy-saving initiatives.
