Overview
EN 60730-1:2000/A12:2003 is an important amendment to the European Standard EN 60730-1:2000, focusing on the automatic electrical controls for household and similar use. Published by CENELEC in 2003, this amendment updates the general requirements defined in the original standard to improve safety, reliability, and performance of these controls. It outlines the technical specifications and testing procedures that manufacturers and regulators must follow to ensure quality in automatic electrical control devices commonly used in residential environments.
This amendment has been superseded by the more recent EN 60730-1:2011 but remains a significant reference in the development and conformity assessment of household electrical control devices.
Key Topics
Scope and References
The amendment extends the normative references, particularly incorporating IEC 60669-1:1998, which sets the general requirements for switches used in household and similar fixed electrical installations.Endurance Testing
EN 60730-1:2000/A12 specifies rigorous endurance tests for automatic controls, including assessments with tungsten filament and fluorescent lamp loads per IEC 60669-1 clauses. This ensures durability under typical operating conditions.Temperature-related Testing
For operational temperatures below 0 °C, additional tests are mandated to verify performance and reliability, particularly for controls with Type 1 and Type 2 actions. This caters to devices used in colder environments.Load Terminals and AC Mains Requirements
Detailed specifications for load terminals and AC mains connections are clarified, with precise notes on test procedures and criteria to ensure safe and effective electrical conduction.National Standardization and Harmonization
CENELEC mandated implementation deadlines for member states, ensuring uniform adoption within the European Union. Compliance avoids conflicts with national standards and supports pan-European trade and safety.
Applications
EN 60730-1:2000/A12:2003 applies widely across automatic electrical control devices designed for household and similar uses, including:
- Thermostats controlling heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- Timers and switches embedded in household appliances
- Automatic lighting controls for residential and light commercial properties
- Safety controls integrated into electrical domestic devices
- Controls requiring verification for low-temperature environments
Manufacturers, safety inspectors, and certification bodies apply this standard to validate device safety, functionality, and electrical endurance. It supports the design of reliable control units ensuring consumer protection and regulatory compliance.
