Overview

EN 60730-1:2000/A13:2004 is an amendment to the European Standard EN 60730-1:2000, focused on automatic electrical controls for household and similar use. Developed and published by CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, this amendment details updates and recommendations for testing and reassessment in controls for household applications. Although now superseded by EN 60730-1:2011, this amendment played a crucial role in refining general requirements and ensuring product safety and reliability.

This standard and its amendment cover key aspects of design, testing, and certification processes for automatic electrical controls used in residential and similar environments, aligning with evolving safety and performance criteria.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
EN 60730-1:2000/A13:2004 provides general requirements for automatic electrical controls that regulate household appliances and similar equipment. This includes safety, reliability, and electrical performance demands.

  • Testing and Certification Updates
The amendment introduces new testing recommendations especially for controls previously certified under older versions (EN 60730-1:1995 and its amendments). Testing focuses on:

    • Maximum rated voltage compliance (especially controls declared between 660V and 690V)
    • Pollution degree considerations affecting electrical insulation
    • Proof tracking index related to insulation performance
    • Updated classification items within testing tables
  • Clause 20 Integration
Incorporates requirements from IEC 60664-1 and IEC 60664-3, addressing electrical insulation coordination for equipment across different pollution degrees and voltage levels.

  • Reassessment Necessity
Highlights areas where reassessment and retesting are advisable to maintain compliance, ensuring controls meet stricter or revised safety standards.

  • Annex ZD Informative Details
Provides detailed guidance on the scope of additional testing, references to specific clauses, and notes on voltage limits, crucial for manufacturers and certification bodies to follow.

Applications

EN 60730-1:2000/A13:2004 is essential for manufacturers, product testers, and certification agencies involved with:

  • Household Appliances
Controls embedded in devices such as washing machines, dishwashers, heating systems, and air conditioning units.

  • Similar Use Environments
Includes controls used in light commercial or institutional equipment where household-level reliability and safety standards apply.

  • Quality Assurance and Compliance
Ensures products meet European market safety requirements, reducing risks of electrical failure and promoting user safety.

  • Product Development and Testing
Assists designers and engineers in meeting updated electrical control regulations and achieving certifications without disruptions.

Related Standards

  • EN 60730-1:2011
Superseding standard providing updated general requirements for automatic electrical controls.

  • IEC 60664-1 and IEC 60664-3
International standards addressing electrical insulation coordination that are referenced and integrated within Clause 20 of EN 60730-1/A13.

  • Previous Amendments (A1, A11, A12, etc.)
Earlier amendments to EN 60730-1 which define incremental changes relevant to ongoing control certification.

  • National Electrotechnical Standards
This amendment must be adopted identically by CENELEC member countries, often forming the basis for national standards in EU countries.

By adhering to EN 60730-1:2000/A13:2004, manufacturers and testing bodies ensure automatic electrical controls for household and similar use meet rigorous European safety and functionality standards, maintaining market access and consumer trust. This amendment reinforces the importance of ongoing evaluation and updating of safety testing practices in product certification.
