Overview

EN IEC 61010-2-051:2021/A11:2021 is a critical European standard published by the CLC that sets out the safety requirements for electrical equipment used for measurement, control, and laboratory applications, specifically focusing on laboratory equipment designed for mechanical mixing and stirring. This standard supplements the general requirements of Part 1 of IEC 61010 by addressing particular safety concerns for devices where mechanical energy impacts materials, such as changes in shape, size, or homogeneity during mixing or stirring operations. The scope includes equipment with or without integrated heating elements, referencing IEC 61010-2-010 for heating device safety.

This amendment (A11) updates the 2021 edition of EN IEC 61010-2-051 to enhance safety protocols, especially concerning hazards from mechanical mixing processes, explosion protection, and control system safety validation. It aligns with EU directives, supporting appliance manufacturers and laboratory users in complying with regulatory safety obligations.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: Applies to all electrically operated laboratory equipment and accessories involved in mechanical mixing and stirring within chemical and scientific laboratory environments.
  • Mechanical Energy Hazards: Focus on risks arising from mechanical forces, such as torque on high-viscosity fluids possibly causing glass breakage or other mechanical failures.
  • Speed Controls: Requirements for speed control mechanisms include testing beyond maximum speed limits to ensure the system withstands overload without failure.
  • Protection Against Explosion: Incorporates references to the EN 60079 series standards addressing equipment safety in explosive atmospheres, ensuring laboratory mixers are safe for use in hazardous environments.
  • Safety Interlocks: Validation of interlock systems using IEC 62061 and ISO 13849 standards for functional safety and performance levels. Manufacturers must provide documentation on Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) or Performance Levels (PL).
  • Expelled Materials Hazard: Recognizes expelled parts may include both equipment parts and stirred sample materials, necessitating design provisions to mitigate risks.
  • Normative References: Integrates multiple international and European standards relevant to machinery safety, control systems, and explosion protection to ensure comprehensive safety coverage.

Applications

EN IEC 61010-2-051:2021/A11:2021 is essential for manufacturers and users of laboratory mixers and stirrers used in:

  • Chemical research laboratories
  • Pharmaceutical production and testing
  • Food and beverage laboratory testing
  • Materials science and formulation labs
  • Quality control and process monitoring laboratories

Its adoption improves safety in environments requiring reliable control of mixing operations, where potential hazards from mechanical forces or explosive atmospheres must be mitigated. Laboratories utilizing this standard ensure safer handling of samples, reduce risk of injuries, and comply with EU safety regulations for electrical equipment.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 61010-1: General safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use.
  • IEC 61010-2-010: Particular requirements for laboratory equipment with heating elements.
  • EN 60079 series: Explosion protection standards for electrical equipment in hazardous locations, including flameproof enclosures and intrinsic safety.
  • IEC 62061 and ISO 13849: Standards for functional safety of machinery control systems, interlock validation, and safety integrity levels.

Practical Value

Implementing EN IEC 61010-2-051:2021/A11:2021 ensures laboratory mixers and stirring devices meet up-to-date electrical and mechanical safety requirements, reducing risk of accidents related to overheating, mechanical failures, or combustible atmospheres. Users benefit from:

  • Improved safety for operators and laboratory personnel
  • Enhanced machine reliability under maximum speed and torque conditions
  • Compliance with EU Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU safety objectives
  • Clear guidelines for hazard control, including alarm systems for excessive torque
  • Validated control systems with documented safety integrity, aligning with industry best practices

In summary, this standard is indispensable for manufacturers aiming to design and market safe laboratory mixing equipment, and for laboratories committed to maintaining high safety standards in electrically operated mixing and stirring operations.
