Overview
IEC 60745-2-8:2003+AMD1:2008 CSV is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focused on the safety requirements for hand-held motor-operated electric tools, specifically for shears and nibblers. It builds upon the general safety provisions set out in IEC 60745-1, detailing particular requirements applicable to these metal cutting and punching tools.
This standard applies to tools with rated voltage limits of up to 250 V for single-phase AC or DC, and up to 440 V for three-phase AC tools. It integrates the second edition from 2003 with Amendment 1 from 2008, providing a consolidated version that facilitates compliance without the need to order amendments separately.
Key Topics
Scope and Application: The standard is specific to shears and nibblers designed for cutting or punching metal sheets, plates, and strips. It supplements the general safety requirements of IEC 60745-1 with tailored provisions to address the unique risks associated with these tools.
Definitions:
- Shear: A tool intended for shearing metal sheets, plates, and strips.
- Nibbler: A tool designed for punching metal sheets, plates, and strips.
Marking and Instructions: Tools must be clearly marked with the maximum thickness of metal, measured in millimeters, that can be safely cut. This marking refers to steel with a tensile strength of 390 N/mm² unless otherwise specified.
Construction and Mechanical Safety: Special attention is given to the tool construction ensuring mechanical strength and protection against mechanical hazards. Certain clauses from the general Part 1 standard are modified or not applicable to better suit shears and nibblers.
Electrical Safety: Includes requirements for protection against access to live parts, limits on heating, leakage currents, electric strength, and overload protections consistent with the general requirements but adapted for these specific tools.
Testing Conditions: Specifies test conditions like operating the tool at rated input for 30 minutes to measure temperature rises.
Supply Connection: Requires the use of supply cords of a specific durable type-no lighter than heavy polychloroprene sheathed flexible cable-to ensure durability and user safety.
Applications
IEC 60745-2-8 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and safety engineers involved with:
Manufacturing Safety Compliance: Ensuring that hand-held electric shears and nibblers meet international safety standards before entering the market.
Product Development: Developing new metal cutting and punching tools that conform to recognized safety benchmarks.
