Overview
ISO 8160:1987 - Textiles - Textured Filament Yarns - Vocabulary is an international standard developed by ISO, specifically by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles. This standard provides a systematic vocabulary, naming various types of textured filament yarns and defining them based on the processes by which they are produced. The clarity brought through standardized terminology is vital for industry professionals, manufacturers, and stakeholders in the global textile sector, ensuring effective communication and consistency across markets.
Key Topics
ISO 8160:1987 focuses on the following key areas:
- Classification: Defines and classifies different types of textured filament yarns produced by various texturizing methods.
- Terminology: Supplies clear definitions for terms commonly used within the textile, yarn manufacturing, and finishing industries.
- Manufacturing Processes: Describes the distinguishing features of yarn types in relation to their production processes, such as twist, crimp, and heat treatment.
Key terminology covered in the standard includes:
- Textured filament yarn: Yarn characterized by twist and/or crimp, giving added stretch or bulk.
- Bi-shrinkage yarn: Created by combining filaments with different shrinkage properties.
- Bi-component yarn: Made from filaments with chemically or physically distinct components.
- Draw-textured yarn: Where drawing and texturizing occur on a single machine.
- Compression chamber crimped yarn: Overfed yarn compressed into a heated chamber.
- Gear-crimped yarn: Crimped between toothed wheels.
- False-twist textured yarn: Textured by twisting, heat setting, and untwisting.
- False-twist stabilized yarn: Textured using false-twist with additional heat stabilization.
- Twist-textured yarn: Two yarns are twisted together, heat set, then separated.
- Knit-de-knit yarn: Yarn knitted, heat set, unraveled, and wound.
- Jet-bulked yarn: Entangled via a turbulent fluid stream.
- Edge-crimped yarn: Heated yarn passed over a knife-edge.
Applications
The vocabulary and definitions established by ISO 8160:1987 are widely applied across:
- Textile Manufacturing: Standardized terms enhance communication between suppliers, manufacturers, converters, and buyers, reducing misunderstandings in contracts and technical documentation.
- Product Development: Accurate terminology assists in the specification and comparison of different textured filament yarns for end-product design and application.
- Trade and Procurement: Ensures international buyers and sellers describe and request yarns consistently, facilitating fair trade and improving global supply chain efficiency.
- Quality Control and Testing: Supports clear labeling and documentation required for testing and certification, aiding compliance with other standards and regulations.
- Education and Training: Serves as an authoritative reference for technical training, promoting industry-wide understanding of textile vocabulary.
Related Standards
ISO 8160:1987 is part of a broader family of textile standards on filament yarns and textile terminology. Related standards include:
- ISO 2076 - Textiles - Man-made fibres - Generic names: Defines terminology for various man-made fibers.
- ISO 1130 - Textile fibres - Some methods of sampling for the determination of average fibre characteristics: Focuses on methods of fiber characterization.
- ISO 3951 - Textiles - Vocabulary: Offers additional essential vocabulary for the textile sector.
- ISO 10410 - Textiles - Filament yarns - Test methods: Outlines test methods for filament yarn properties.
By ensuring precise, universally understood terminology, ISO 8160:1987 supports enhanced cooperation, quality, and interoperability in the international textiles industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 8160 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38,
Textiles.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless otherwise stated.
