The method uses comparison with pictorial standards to designate the quantity, size and depth of cracks as part of the broader ISO 4628 series on evaluation of coating degradation. The standard supports consistent, repeatable visual inspections for ageing- and weathering-related failures.

Le comité chargé de l’élaboration du présent document est l’ISO/TC 35, Peintures et vernis, sous-comité
SC 9, Méthodes générales d’essais des peintures et vernis.
Cette troisième édition annule et remplace la deuxième édition (ISO 4628-4:2003), qui a fait l’objet
d’une révision technique en vue d’apporter les modifications suivantes:
a) une limite inférieure a été introduite dans le Tableau 2 pour l’évaluation visuelle des défauts;
b) une référence normative à l’ISO 13076, qui traite de l’éclairage pour l’évaluation, a été ajoutée.
