BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 68, Screw Thxeads, was prepared by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 1, Screw Threads, the Secretariat of which is held by the
Sveriges Standardiseringskommission (SIS),
As soon as it was created, in London, in 1946, IS0 entrusted the Technical
Committee with the drawing up of an international standard for screw threads
for screws, bolts and nuts, applicable both in the “metric” countries and in the
“inch” countries.
The Technical Committee met successively in Paris, in June 1949, in New
York, in June 1952, in Stockholm, in June 1955, and in Lisbon, in May 1957.
At its first meeting, the Technical Committee appointed a Working Com-
mission to assist the Secretariat in preparing the work. At a later date, that
Working Commission adopted the title of Working Group No. 2.
The first endeavours of the Working Group, which met six times between
1949 and 1954, resulted in the adoption by the Technical Committee of a Draft
IS0 Recommendation, dealing on the one hand with the IS0 Basic Profile,
applicable to triangular screw threads, and on the other with basic dimensions of
screw threads for screws, bolts and nuts in the diameter range up to 5 mm.

mulated in the course of this enquiry by various IS0 Member Bodies, was consi-
ldered by Working Group No. 2 at its seventh meeting, held in Paris, in April
1956, and by the Technical Committee itself, at its fourth plenary meeting, held
i~n Lisbon, in May 1957. Further investigatioins made by the Secretariat of
ithe Technical Committee led several Committee Members to revise their initial
attitude with regard to the Draft.
Finally, the Draft IS0 Recommendation was approved by the following 24

This IS0 Recommendation is one of a number of IS0 Recommendations determining inter-
nationally interchangeable triangular screw threads.
It is intended that the complete set of these IS0 Recommendations will cover the following speci-

La Rec nmandation ISO/R 68, Filetages, fut élaborée par le Comité
Technique 13 /TC 1, Filefages, dont le Secrétariat fut assuré par la Sveriges
Standardiseri
pkommission (SIS).
Dès sa
éation, A Londres, en 1946, 1’ISO chargea ce Comité Technique
d’établir une orme internationale applicable aux filetages pour vis, écrous et
boulons, auss
)ien dans les pays utilisant les unités métriques que dans les pays

Le Con é Technique se réunit successivement B Paris, en juin 1949, B

Au cou] de sa première réunion, le Comité Technique nomma une Com-
mission de 7 wail, chargée d’assister le Secrétariat dans la préparation des

Les pre [ers efforts déployés par le Groupe de Travail, qui se réunit B six
reprises entre
949 et 1954, aboutirent A l’adoption, par le Comité Technique,
d’un Projet d Recommandation ISO, traitant d’une part du profil de base ISO,
applicable au: filetages triangulaires, et d’autre part des dimensions de base des
filetages de bl lonnerie d’un diamètre inférieur ou égal A 5 mm.
