BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 148, Beam Inipact Test (V Notch) on Steel, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 17, Steel, the Secretariat of which is held by the
British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Between the third and the fourth plenary meeting of ISO/TC 17, held respectively in
London, in December 1953 and in Stockholm, in June 1955, Working Group ISO/TC
17/WG 1, Methods of Mechanical Testing,for Steel, carried on a good deal of research
in connection with this sort of test.
A draft proposal was submitted to the Technical Committee during its fourth plenary
meeting, but no agreement could be reached and doubts were expressed as to the usefulness
of such a test except perhaps for research work. The general opinion at the plenary
meeting was, however, that the preparation of such a Recommendation would be desirable,
and Working Group No. 1 was requested to continue this study.
A second draft proposal was submitted to the Technical Committee during its fifth
plenary meeting, held in London, in March 1957, where it was considerably amended.
As a result of decisions reached at this meeting, a third draft proposal was prepared by
the Secretariat and was submitted to the members of ISO/TC 17 for their approval. A few
minor changes were felt to be in order, and the draft proposal thus revised was adopted
as a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
On 11 July 1958, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 208) was distributed to all the
IS0 Member Bodies and was approved, subject to some modifications, by the following
Member Bodies :

BEAM IMPACT TEST V-NOTCH FOR STEEL
1. PRINCIPLE OF TEST
The test consists in breaking by one blow from a swinging hammer, under conditions defined
hereafter, a test piece V-notched in the middle and supported at each end. The energy absorbed
is determined.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 148, Essai de choc sur l’éprouvette bi-appuyée avec entaille
en V en acier, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 17, Acier, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par la British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Dans l’intervalle séparant la troisième et la quatrième réunion plénière d’ISO/TC 17,
tenues respectivement à Londres, en décembre 1953 et à Stockholm, en juin 1955, le Groupe
de Travail ISO/TC 17/GT 1, Méthodes d’essais mécaniques pour l’acier, effectua des
recherches très poussées concernant ce genre d’essais.
Un avant-projet fut soumis au Comité Technique lors de sa quatrième réunion plé-
nière, mais aucun accord ne put être réalisé et des doutes furent exprimés quant à l’utilité
d’un tel essai bien qu’il puisse convenir pour des travaux de recherches. Toutefois, au cours
de cette réunion plénière, il fut généralement admis que l’établissement d’une telle Recom-
mandation était souhaitable, et le Groupe de Travail No 1 fut invité à poursuivre son étude.
Un deuxième avant-projet fut soumis au Comité Technique lors de sa cinquième
réunion plénière, tenue à Londres, en mars 1957, où il fut considérablement amendé. A la
suite des décisions prises à cette réunion, un troisième avant-projet fut établi par le Secré-
tariat et soumis à l’approbation des membres d’ISO/TC 17. Quelques changements de peu
d’importance furent jugés nécessaires et l’avant-projet ainsi revisé fut adopté comme
Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En date du 11 juillet 1958, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 208) fut distribué
à tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO et approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications,
par les Comités Membres suivants:
