BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1968, Ropes and cordage - Vocabulary, was drawn up by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1968, which was circulated to
all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in April 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies :

VOCABULARY
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation defines terms relating to ropes and cordage. These terms are, in particular, for use in
the drafting of other IS0 Recommendations dealing with specification or testing of ropes.
General terminology for the textile industry and terms defining specific ropes for the fishing industry, for agriculture,
for marine use, etc. are not covered by this document.
2. GENERAL TERMS
2.1 Fiat filament
A relatively narrow continuous strip, obtained by cutting or spinning, of a material suitable for textile use,
the thickness of which is slight in relation to the width.
In ropemaking, the filament can be used flat or twisted; generally it is used after fibrillation.
2.2 Twine
Product consisting of one or more yarns twisted or wound to form a structure of continuous length.
- A twine composed of a single yarn is known as “monofilament” or “simple yarn”.
- A twisted twine is composed of two or more yarns twisted together.
- A cabled twine is composed of two or more yarns cabled together.
2.3 Cabled yam
Two or more folded yarns (or alternatively folded and single yarns) twisted together in one or more folding
operations.
NOTE. - In the ropemaking and fishing industries, a cabled yam is generally made of single filaments twisted together, each
receiving an additional twist during the twisting operation, which is known as “cabling”.
2.4 Strand
Product obtained by joining and twisting together several yarns or groups of yarns twisted together.
2.5 Rope
Textile product not less than 4 mm diameter, generally consisting of three or four strands cabled or plaited
together, with or without a core. Three-strand cabled ropes are usually without a core; four-strand cabled
ropes usually have a central core.
2.6 Hawser
A rope generally of a diameter of more than 40 mm (equivalent to a circumference of 5 in) mainly used for
the mooring of ships,

La Recommandation ISO/R 1968, Cordages et articles de corderie - Vocabulaire, a été élaborée par le Comité
Technique ISO/TC 38, Textiles, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1968, qui
fut soumis, en avril 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. 11 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques
modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 définit des termes relatifs aux cordages et articles de corderie. Ces termes sont
à utiliser notamment pour la rédaction d’autres Recommandations IS0 traitant des spécifications ou des essais
des cordages.
Les termes du vocabulaire général de l’industrie textile, de même que ceux définissant les cordages spécifiques à
l’industrie de la pêche, à l’agriculture, à la marine, etc., ne rentrent pas dans son domaine d’application.
2. TERMES GÉNÉRAUX
2.1 Lame textile
Bande continue relativement étroite, obtenue par découpage ou filage en une matière apte à un usage textile,
d’épaisseur relativement faible par rapport à la largeur.
En corderie la lame textile peut être utilisée avec ou sans torsion; elle est généralement utilisée après fibrillation.
2.2 Ficelle
Produit constitué par un ou plusieurs fils tordus ou retordus pour former une structure de longueur continue.
- Une ficelle constituée par un seul fil simple s’appelle «monofil» ou «fil simple)).
- Une ficelle retordue est constituée par plusieurs fils retordus ensemble.
- Une ficelle câblée est constituée par plusieurs fils câblés ensemble.

opérations de retordage.
NOTE. - Dans les industries de pêche et de cordage, un fil câblé est généralement constitué de fils simples retordus ensemble
mais recevant chacun un complément de torsion, au cours de l’opération de retordage qui, dans ce cas, s’appelle «câblage».
2.4 Toron
Produit obtenu par la réunion de plusieurs fils ou duites retordus ensemble.
