BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1791, Modular co-ordination - Vocabulary, was drawn up by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 59, Building construction, the Secretariat of which is held by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1791, which was circulated to all
the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in March 1969. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies :

VOCABULARY
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation gives the definitions of terms necessary for the planning, design and construction
of buildings in accordance with the principles of modular co-ordination, and for the design and manufacture of
components for use in such buildings.
2. VOCABULARY
Terms used in modular co-ordination and necessary supplementary terms”

NOTE. - Certain terms such as “tolerance” and “joint clearance”, used in the following definitions, are themselves
defined in IS0 Recommendation R 1803, Tolerances for building - Vocabulary.
2.1.01 Dimensional co-ordination. A convention on related sizes for the co-ordinating dimensions of building
components and the buildings incorporating them, for their design, manufacture and assembly.
NOTE. - The purposes of dimensional co-ordination are :
to permit the assembly of components on site without cutting or fitting;

to permit the interchangeability of different components.

2.1.02 Modular co-ordination. Dimensional co-ordination employing the basic module or a multimodule.
NOTE. - The purposes of modular co-ordination are :
to reduce the variety of component sizes produced;

to allow the building designer greater flexibility in the arrangement of components.

2.1.03 Component**. A building product formed as a distinct unit, having specified sizes in three
dimensions.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1791, Coordination modulaire - Vocabulaire, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique
ISO/TC 59, Construction immobilière, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1791, qui fut
soumis, en mars 1969, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modi-
fications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 donne la définition des termes utilisés pour la conception, le plan et
l’exécution des bâtiments conçus suivant les principes de la coordination modulaire ainsi que pour la conception
et la fabrication des composants de bâtiment destinés à les réaliser.
2. VOCABULAIRE
Termes de coordination modulaire et termes complémentaires indispensables*

NOTE. - Un certain nombre de termes figurant dans les définitions qui suivent, tels que «tolérances» et «jeux de joints))
sont définis dans la Recommandation ISO/R 1803, Tolérances pour le bâtiment - Vocabulaire.
2.1.01 Coordination dimensionnelle. Convention sur la relation entre les valeurs des dimensions de coordination
des composants de construction et des constructions dans lesquelles ils sont incorporés en vue de leur
conception, de leur fabrication et de leur assemblage.
NOTE. - Les objectifs de la coordination dimensionnelle sont :
de permettre l’assemblage sans coupe ni retouche sur chantier des composants de construction ;

de permettre l’interchangeabilité de divers composants.

2.1.02 Coordination modulaire. Coordination dimensionnelle réalisée par une méthode qui implique l’emploi
du module de base ou d’un multimodule.
NOTE. - Les objectifs de la coordination modulaire sont :
de réduire la variété des formats des composants fabriqués;

de fournir à l’auteur de projets une plus grande souplesse pour la combinaison des composants.

spécifiée dans les trois dimensions.
